Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

I was just given an old Cub Cadet 1872 that the guy said had not ran for 6 years. It has a 54" mower, three point hitch, pto rototiller, cultivator, and a 50" snowblower. 20 minutes, fresh battery, fresh gas, and blowing through the fuel pump and it started right up! Drove it around to show off to the neighbours. Now restoring it.

Thumbs up Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

Hey,Pulltilbroke!Are you a member of the tractorforum.com?
You should be!That 920 is awsome,and we'd probably vote you king!!!LOL
Seriosly,I've run my power equipment business for over 12 years, and that's the FIRST 920 diesel I've ever seen! Cool tractor!
I don't collect 'em,probably cause I work on them so much, but I do have this '59 David Bradley Suburban that I took in on trade.Don't know what to do with it,yet, though. No sheet metal,or engine just frame, running gear, and deck. the only other ones are a Frankenwheels,I'm making, and my "burro",that I posted here.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

Just picked up this bad boy at the weekend, its an 88/89 MTD Lawnflite 505, 8hp Briggs motor with a 30" cut. Its in reasonable condition, has come from a friend who has owned it for the last ten years eight of which it has spent sat in his garage after theey moved house to one without a large lawn,. His wife wanted it gone so we struck a deal as we've moved house and I need a ride-on. It needs a bit of TLC, the balde drive belt is slipping as I think its gone hard with time and the deck bearings could do with a bit of grease and the baldes need sharpening. A service is also in order so I picked up a new spark plug and air filter, oil is clean so it looks like it went away with fresh oil which is good, it also has a brand new battery and started first turn of the key with some fresh gas in it. The plan is to get it into usable condition asap and then spend a bit more time on it over next winter to get it properly sorted out. Its a hoot to drive, I think I may well make a rack for the back over the engine so I can maybe fit a home brewed spray rig. It has a tow bar so I need to make up an adaptor to pull my garden roller with it.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

That's cool! How big of a spray rig did you want to mount? A friend of mine went to a scrap yard, and picked up some propane tank mounts from an old forklift, and used them to mount his sprayer tank.Works pretty well.

I used to have a 1972 Gravely 816 rider. Not a sulky. It had a 42" snow plow and 50" mower deck. Also had a custom built cab with heat! It had the 2 cylinder Onan 16.5 horse. Talk about a real "workhorse"!

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

My buddy just restored a 1973-74 International Cub Cadet model 72 for his neighbor. Now his neighbor doesnt want it. So now its for sale with the refinished mower deck and the 7 HP kohler engine on the Cub has been totally rebuilt and restored down to the Delco-Remy genorator-starter! He only wants $750 for it!

Good looking tractors! A 332 with a turbo, I like it, do you have a locking differential under that as well?

Yes, it has a 420/430 rear end which gave me differential lock and 2 speeds.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

I have a '58 David Bradley Suburban. It was my grandad's, and he used to pull us kids around in a wagon around the farm with it. It still runs well, but needs some work with the drive belt. It is a very cool old tractor, and I get asked to sell to it ALL THE TIME. Notice the old Ford truck flywheels that PawPaw used for wheel weights. At least they are good for something!

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

I love vintage mowers. I used to have a bunch but sold them off for love of trucks. Here are two I just got to redo from a estate sale. 1966 sears custom 6. and a 1980 wheel horse c-105. I bypassed the safety switches on the wheel horse, and the ol Kohler 10hp seems to run good, everything needs a once over as its been sitting in the woods for years. The 66 sears custom 6 has been stored in a shed for at least 20 years. Its got the original 6hp Tecumseh motor. It had no spark. I pulled the flywheel, cleaned the points, poured some gas down the carb and pulled the rope. It busted off and ran for a few seconds. Seems the float is full of gas. I have YET to locate a replacement float. Its a cool little tractor. It has a cast aluminum deck etc. The plans for the two are a cleanup and LIGHT resto on the 66 sears as I want to keep it unrestored but functional FOR NOW. The 80 wheel horse will get a full resto. as its been spray bombed a few times anyways.

Re: Anyone else mess with old Garden tractors?

That JD 332 with a turbo is suhweet!

My first was a Sears Custom 8E, made by Roper. Found it in my in-law's barn in the early 80s, got it running (mild "custom" restoration) and used it until we moved to Arizona. I'll have to find some before/after pics and post em up.

Since our return to Michigan I've gravitated to tractors that are a bit larger - a '42 Farmall A and then a '72 Cub Lowboy - but that's all they are to me: overgrown old garden tractors!

I found a float for the carb today, put it back together and ran and drove it for the first time in atleast 20 years! Cool little mower. I'm not sure how to embed the video but here is the link to it

OK, OK, so I killed it! Last time I cut the grass it was a bit down on power and tbh its struggled to cut it at the best of times as we have a field masquerading as a lawn so the grass is really thick and we've had a great year for grass, wet, a few days of sun followed by wet. I've been away over in France for most of August, arrived home on Monday, got the mower out to cut the foot high grass and on startup it filled the whole garage with thick blue/white smoke, then when it had cleared and I took it out something went twag underneath and now I have no drive forwards or backwards, might just be the clutch linkage come apart or it might be the tranny gone bang. Either way its not worth putting any more money into it as its not really up to the job so it'll get parted out and sold on ebay.

The wife wants me to get something more reliable so the budget has been upped and after visiting a number of local dealers all but one of whom didn't have a single used ride-on for sale and the one that did was way overpriced I was put on to a customer of one who had his for sale. I went to see it yesterday and did a deal.

Its a 2001 Honda 2220, 20HP V twin Honda engine, hydrostatic drive, 48" deck, electric clutch on the blades, 300 Litre collector and mulching plug in immaculate condition apart from a bit of surface rust on the top of the deck that I'll sort over the winter. This was the top of the range when new and cost £3249 and Hondas seem to really hold their value so I've paid a slightly eye watering £950 for it but I'm hoping it'll last me a good few years if I look after it. Only problem is it is literally an inch too wide to get it into my trailer so I need to either borrow or hire a bigger one to get it home. The deck width does mean that there will be a couple of places that I'll have to mow with the push mower but it will speed up cutting the rest enormously over my current 30" deck.
