Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

Repop pre-72 stuff is between $125-200 so OEM stuff is definitely worth 2-bills.

What type of truck are you building BTW? Your title denotes a CCSB but does that mean 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, or leaving it a dually/1-ton w/a short bed?

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

Scotti, I am doing a 1 ton ccsb single rear wheel. I want it to look as if it rolled off the production line that way. Ive allways liked the (oldman) 3/4-1 ton 2wd steel wheel/ hubcap look for some reason. Plan on going with a factory blue or gold with white down the center paint scheme. I'll probably go with newer seats though.

Dieselwrencher-- Ive got all my nos doors now. I just need, nos inner fenders, core support (chevrolet) tailgate. But thanks though.

Cool. That's what I was originally half-fast looking for (a CC 1-ton single wheel truck that could be converted to a shorty). My current dually was obtained via a trade because of how nice it was compared to what I had seen locally on the CC-single wheel choices.

I'm just dropping it for now but my buddy w/a body shop keeps poking me to do a shorty conversion w/some big wheels....

I'd love to put mine to 2wd but then it'll be worthless here. You have to love county roads in the winter.

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

Well not much more work done, still waiting on my 2wd front end. The guy I am getting it from has been busy and has yet to start removing it. Hurry hurry! Today I went and picked up inner fenders and a core support. I still need to find a 73-80 (CHEVROLET) tailgate and a rustfree shortbox. Sofar Ive got $1425 into all 4 doors, inner/outer fenders and the core support. Probably atleast $100 in gas.

Hoping that with all NOS parts I might save some $$$ on the paint prep. I still havent decided on a body shop, doubt if I'll be ready for that before spring. Need to decide what engine tranny combo so I can get the right mounts, before the frame can go to the sandblaster and be painted.

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

Picked up the (CHEVROLET) tailgate yesterday. $200 plus about $50/200 miles to get it. Tomorrow a 1 guy is buying the 88 spare crewcab, doors and front clip off the 91, $500. Then the another guys picking up the front 4wd mounts etc for $175. Makes me real happy, I had $1250 into both the 88 and the 91 and sofar Ive got about $ 1200 back in parts sold. Still have a dana 80, 454tbi 2wd sm465 to sell and a rusted frame to scrap. I'll need all the $$ I can for all the other work/ parts left to get

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

About the only thing I done on the project is buy more parts. Im still waiting on the front end parts, suppose to pick them up this weekend. The guy that I am getting them from just has'nt had time to get them off his truck. My plan is to get the 2wd front suspension parts fitted to my 4wd frame, then take everything beck apart for sandblasting and paint. My buddy is doing at the shop he works at so I wanted to do everthing at one time. Once I get past that hurdle I should be able to start making some regular progress. But as soon as I start wrenching I will start posting my progress.

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

I finally picked up my 2wd frontend this weekend. I think that I might be up against a wall though. I am not sure now if it will mount on my 4wd frame. I am noticing quite a few differences.

Is there anyone out there who has put a 2wd front suspension on a 4wd frame. A 1 ton frame? I sure could use the help. It sure would have been a ton easier if I would have had a 2wd frame to start with. I did have someone who wanted to trade frames but his was not rustfree like mine. Anyone out there want to trade a rustfree 1ton 2wd frame for a rustfree 1 ton 4wd frame that has been shortened. Its not for sale unless I find a frame. If I do I'll post in the for sale section.

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

Made progress today on the 2wd swap. I was able to get some good measurements and the new holes all drilled. I broke down and ordered new rear spring mounts from GMparts east. Now I only have a couple small things to do before sending the frame off for sandblasting and paint. I cannot wait to get past this hurdle so I can start assembling the chassis.
Now that the weather is getting better I'll have alot more room in the garage to work. I didnt get squat done over the winter. Too much sh.t and not enough room and to keep the wife happy I let her have a parking space inside during the winter. It just makes life so much easier.

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

Hey, I need some help on what front springs to use! I am going to use a 6.0 with a 4l80e trans. I will using Moog Springs. I want to use only AMERICAN made products if I can. I hope Moog are still Made In America. From what I can tell there are constant and variable rate springs. I would like a good ride and a firm stance. Any and all help is appreciated. I promise to get some pictures as soon as I make some progress! If you guys are anything like me pics are a plus. Thanks Chuck

I have this info saved from the 'Make it Handle' thread. Good info shared by Rob @ NoLimit . . ......

Spring rates for stock style C-10's seem high, but this is do to the A-arm ratio. Here are some stock spring rates
Moog # 6082 722 lbs/in 6 cyl, and light v-8
Moog # 6542 842 lbs/in std v-8
Moog # 6102 1015 lbs/in bigblock, longbed c.s.
Moog # 6104 1016 lbs/in 3/4 ton, sits 1/2" higher than #6102
Moog # 6454 1060 lbs/in 3/4t bbc, c.s, 1ton
So, Hotchkis' 1100lb may not be so heavy. I currently have the #6082 spring with one coil cut in the JT project, and it is too soft for me. I'm going to swap in the #6102 springs next week. Going to track test it tues. with the soft springs. All my number crunching shows me a 950 spring, but we'll see.
When it comes to frame boxing, i'm not a big fan of full chassis boxing, as it can lead to a cracked frame. Bracing key areas, and creating triangles is a better aproach, check the earlier posts.

Re: 1979 2wd Chevy CCSB aka old man

Finally have a few pics to post. I picked up some of my front end parts from the being powdercoated. For whatrever reason they didnt get everything done, but for what he's charging me I dont mind being patient. I picked up a good compressor and now I am able to sandblast myself rather than depending on or paying someone to do it for me.

14 bolt with 4:10 and Detroit Locker. I picked a rearend up with only 3000 miles that came from Berne Co. The guy had it in a Blazer that he had gotton rid of. It was a CL find for $300. I used my original rearend because of the spring and shock mount placements. Besides my housing was really clean too. I ended up using Sherwin Williams Hi-Mil Sher-Tar to paint it. I am using this also on my frame. Its suppose to be some heavy duty stuff.

The Sherwin Williams Hi-Mil, Sher-Tar that I am using is an epoxy. You have to mix it 3:1 with a hardener. I hope it works as good as they say.
