Re: 1990 Suburban Project

Today, I sprayed the top of my Suburban. It was the first time I had ever used basecoat so starting with the top was a great way to practice since not many people can see up there.. It took 3 coats to cover completely. Then right afterwards, I applied 2 very wet coats of SPI production clear. It all sprayed very nice. The SPI production clear really leveled well and I got hardly any orange peel. I highly recommend this clear coat. It's high quality stuff and not insanely expensive.

They only sell online and the prices they have listed include shipping. I wanted very high quality clear coat (to withstand the Texas heat) without paying a fortune and this is what I came up with. The jade green basecoat is Kirker. It's considered a cheapie brand however, it looks like the clear coat is was counts when it comes to the paint holding up.

Re: 1990 Suburban Project

Today, I painted the silver. The Kirker silver really covered well and laid down very evenly. I only used about a quart of paint to do all of that. I then laid 3 thick wet coats of clear. I lay my clear so wet that it is just on the verge of running. Fortunately, I got no runs but I was close on several areas. I also use very slow activator. It levels better but it gives more time for the bugs to get into the paint. I keep a tweezer handy in my pocket for that. I must have pulled 30 small bugs out of the paint.

Re: 1990 Suburban Project

I sprayed the green today. It all went on very well except the hood. It was just too much reach while standing on the ladder. I put 1 coat of clear coat on the hood and it didn't lay down nice so I did not continue on with it. Tomorrow, I will pull off the hood and set it on a bench so I can deal with it better. However, I laid down 3 wet coats over the rest of the green. I did get some orange peel which is to be expected when laying down thick coat of clear but I plan to wet sand and level it off anyways. The main thing is to have enough clear so you don't sand through.

Also, big beetle landed on the hood while the paint was still wet so I would have had to do it over anyways. This is one of the hazards of painting outside.

Re: 1990 Suburban Project

man i like those colors together. looks awsome.

an a side note the first paint i ever sprayed was on a 68 vw bug the green was just like yours but maybe 3 shades darker. and the guy wanted chevy rs type racing stripes in brilliant silver. it didnt look anything like your truck. that bug with racing stripes was as ugly as yours is sexy

Thanks.....
I used those colors because the brand of paint I bought (Kirker) only sells a set amount of colors that are already premixed which is much less costly that way. The green was also about the closest one to the original. However, the original was several shades darker. I didn't want to totally change colors because that would have meant painting the interior. If I had my choice, I would have gone with a two tone silver. But yeah, the green / silver color scheme looks pretty good and is not all that popular.

Re: 1990 Suburban Project

I decided to pull the hood off. It was much lighter than I thought. It seemed to be half the weight of my 1972 Chevy truck. Had I known how easy it was to take off, I would have done it from the beginning. Anyways, before repainting, there were some minor dings I didn't see earlier that I took care of. I then laid down a thin layer of primer and shot the paint again. This time, the paint came out nearly as smooth as glass. When everything is ideal, the paint just flows.

Here's what I used. The colors come already mixed. You save a bunch of money this way. I also used single stage paint but used a converter to change it to basecoat. It's cheaper doing it this way and has more UV inhibitors over buying already mixed basecoat. Not many people know this but I talked directly to the representative to find out this information. The disadvantage of this is it requires additional mixing in of the basecoat converter. I used a digital scale to do all the mixing.

The most important aspect for the job turning out good is taking the time with the prep work. I completely sanded off the old paint and basically started off from scratch. I also removed everything I could. The next important thing is to have a good air compressor. You've got to have good constant airflow. I used a 2 stage 5 hp air compressor. The next thing that is important is some experience but you have to try first and make some mistakes before gaining experience. Autobody101.com is an excellent site to read up on it.

Yes!! The trailer tires desperately need replacement so I may just go find a newer set of tires and wheels with the correct bolt pattern. I do have the factory hubcaps for those Chevy wheels but haven't bothered to install them.
