Re: 700r4 swap... Used...
if you cruise it on the highway mostly. why not just re-gear the rear end to a 3.08? easier then a swap and probably cheaper. and I bet it drops your rpms at least a 1000.
good luck either way. and this is for MARKTDN http://webrodder.com/article/700r4-v...-which-is-best stock for stock its not even close 700r4. rebuilt modified like art carr? well it better be after paying at least 2k to rebuild it. |

Re: 700r4 swap... Used...
My truck originally came with 4:11 rear gears and I doubt that I have the talent to properly set up the lash on a new ring & pinion set without it destroying itself within a few hundred miles, so for a couple hundred dollars I found a complete salvage yard 3.08 differential, and now I don't get dirty looks from little old ladies passing me by on the freeway while my engine is screaming itself into an early grave.

A buddy told me to stay away from that, because I 'wouldn't be happy' with the loss of performance... Again, not a racer... But who doesn't like to get off the line from time to time... |

Re: 700r4 swap... Used...
i installed a 700r4 and loved it, my motor wasn't making a ton of power so the trans was just fine. od and lock up converter with 3.73 cruise at 85 mph
no problem. once you make the switch you will be glad you did... my .02

Re: 700r4 swap... Used...
I plan on putting a 700 in mine as well, but I'm in the same boat and don't know who to trust locally to build one. I've got a bad taste in my mouth after dealing with the 200 in my turbo Regal. I bought a "bullet proof" unit from a big name Buick builder and it smoked itself in 20 miles and maybe 4 1/8 mile passes. So even though I have the original 200 sitting in my shop taking up space, I plan on using the 700. If you find a local place that does them I would be interested too. The only recommendation I've had locally is in Wichita Falls.

Re: 700r4 swap... Used...
This link, http://webrodder.com/article/700r4-v...-which-is-best
and the comments by it's author Doc Frohmader are overwhelmingly biased towards the 700r4, regardless of the comments towards the usefulness of a 2004r. He's about as biased as Fox news when they try to throw liberals a bone. Then, there's uncertainty in his source, which appears to be Greg from Phoenix Transmissions, because he isn't clear on what he sourced from that company. It is a breakdown of all the stock components in both transmissions, and how much "beefier" the 700's components are all around, except, Phoenix transmissions doesn't sell a stock rebuild on either, so it immediately gets cloudy as to what they can handle stock. However, Monster transmissions claims their mild rebuilt stock 2004r handles 250hp/225tq, and their mild rebuilt 700r4 handles 275hp/250tq, within 25hp/tq of eachother. That's a really slim margin considering how "beefy" the 700r4 is stock. The bowtie overdrives website is down so I couldn't compare their actual figures, but Phoenix Transmissions lowest model 2004r and 700r4 handle 300hp/325hp respectively. Another 25 hp difference, and they don't make tq claims on their website. All I have gathered is the sum of the heavy duty parts is worth 25hp/25tq. Don't get me wrong, I use a 700r4 in my truck, I just hate biased articles that can cost someone hundreds and thousands of dollars over slight of hand. It also bothered me that with as much research as he apparently had done, he still referred to the trans as a 200r4. While anyone knows what he is talking about, you'd think that if a person's favorite car was a 1966 Camero, that they would know that 1967 was the first model year and it's spelled Camaro. It's hard to take an informative article seriously when careless mistakes are made on the subject researched. |
