Re: Seat options for 65

I hear you, must be the internal frame of the seat. I'm not sure when they started doing it like that. I think my brothers old 2000 was this way also. The other reason I went with this style of seat was I had the same seat in my 06 crew cab and I liked the seat. Put in some long days driving in that truck.

Re: Seat options for 65

After my first long drive in my '65 last weekend I find myself very interesting in this. My current seat, with its early 90's vintage cover, isn't the most comfortable seat I've ever sat in.

Better seatbelts and the center console would also be nice additions. My truck isn't a restoration, so I don't care about originality. Since these seat frames seem to be hard to come by, perhaps selling this seat will offset the cost of something newer.

Re: Seat options for 65

My seats cost me 300 bucks plus the drive to go get them. They are gray and in very nice shape. No rips tears burns or stains. The drivers seat is power so I'm not sure if that will cause me any problems or not. I haven't got that far yet. From keeping my eye out cloth seats are 300-500 range. I've seen black leather ones for over a grand. I'm keeping mine gray so I don't have to worry about the extra cost of being reupholstered.

Re: Seat options for 65

I to went with them specifically because of the built-in shoulder belt as well. As far as crash worthiness they would have had to been tested when new, I trust them. I have bought 2 sets I paid $150 for the bench set and $175 for the set with the fold down console. One of my Dodges (a 99) also has seat-belts built into the seats, I was in a bad head-on accident many years ago in that truck those seats stayed together well and 15 years later I still drive that truck with the same seats still in it.

The seat frames are quite beefy. Pull the covers off and you'll see.

Got it.. I found some from a 2000 for $150 but they are 2.5 hours away and a little dirty with a rip in drivers seat.

Re: Seat options for 65

I my mind the seats are all about what will fit and work for you. If the ford is nice, usable (lots of measurements), priced right and you can live with the f-word I say go for it. I have found lots of parts on this web-site http://car-part.com/. Check it out, it is a nationwide database of junkyards, I had over 13 pages of hits on these Chevy seats in Indiana.

Thanks.. I also found some really nice black leather from a Impala. I assume car seats are fine with the proper spacers to get them up.

Re: Seat options for 65

In case you decide to go with the 99 to 2006 seats with the built in shoulder straps...see if you can find the 2004-2006 seats as the earlier version used some type of foam that seemed to break down too easy. My dad had a 99 GMC and the bottom seat was trash!

Somewhere I read that GM changed the foam in 2004 and I have a set of 2006 seats that are really firm but not broken down...

Tom

PS - You will lose a bit of leg room as the newer seats have a backrest / lower lumbar that is thicker by a few inches then the stock seat

Re: Seat options for 65

Well went looking yesterday and after looking at several sets I couldn't decide so the guy cut me a great deal and I bought both of the ones I liked. Black leather from a 2010 Impala and copper leather from a 2007 Saturn. He had a few truck seats but I liked the looks of these better and no cracks or rips. 400 for both sets so I couldn't pass them up. Now to build a frame from square tubing to bolt to my existing holes.and hook some electric up if I can.

Nice looking seats. I'll be interested to see how the wiring goes for you. I have the same problem but it is going to be a while till I even get around to setting my seats in the cab.

Probably not with these unless I can find a place to attach them. I'll keep you informed on the wiring. I have some diagrams and I may play around with the alittle tomorrow.

Re: Seat options for 65

As for power to the seats I just ran a 12 Volt supply wire with a 30 amp inline fuse to the heavy gauge red wire and a ground to the heavy black wire on the seat plug and all controls worked fine. I hooked the Copper seats with heat the heat control did not work. I assume the power for that comes from somewhere else even though the button is on the seat. Don't need it anyway.

Re: Seat options for 65

I decided to go with Corbeau Seats instead of trying to make other factory seats work. They make seat mounts for anything and the ones for our trucks mount to the bench seat holes. Part of the reason I'm going to use them is because I'm a big man and secondly my interior is painted and didn't want to mess with the mickey-mouse shoulder belt mounting. As it stands I plan to go with cam-lock 5 point harnesses since the seats I like have the slots but also the cushion for a daily driven truck. Besides they take up less room than a factory seat and offer a cleaner look.

I found a salvage yard I've never heard of about a half hour from me today. They list several trucks on their website so I'm going to take a ride tomorrow and see what they have available.

I'm also about 6 foot. Does your truck still have its gas tank in-cab? What steering wheel do you have? I ask because I really want a 99-06 seat with the integrated seatbelts.

I'm 5'8" 200 lbs. My 66' does not have the tank in the cab. I set a 2004 Silverado seat in my truck it was to tight for me between my legs and the wheel. (Stock column and wheel). I could've lived it but I wasn't comfortable. I know few people on have posted up and said they're happy with the swap. If you know someone that has a truck with that style seat ask them if they will let you remove it and set it in your truck before you buy one. It only took me less than 10 minutes to remove the 05' Silverado seat at a junkyard with my cordless impact.

I bought a seat cover from Rockauto for my stock seat and I am very happy with it.

Good to know. I don't have the tank in my cab, and a I'm running a stock wheel on a tilt column. Since I have power steering, the wheel is bigger than it needs to be, so changing it is an option.

Re: Seat options for 65

No-frills Smittybuilt low-back bucket seats from Summit are $129. each, and look very similar to the Bostrum van seats from the early '60s (that found their way into Mopar Super Stock race cars), and similar to the Buddy Buckets from '66-up.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/smt-44801

I have a friend that put them in two race cars and drove thousands of HARD miles in them, and said they were very comfortable. '53 Stude in the 2,000 mile La Carrera Panamericana road race (which is brutal Mexican roads), and a '65 Mustang for the Targa Newfoundland.
I have a pair for my '57 Gasser, but don't have any seat time in them yet.

These Rugged Ridge low back buckets, also from Summit, are $148, and look a little more factory.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rgg-1340001

I'll be getting one or the other, and using an LMC center console with cup holders. Not the really expensive repro console with chrome trim, the plain one.

Low back buckets with a plain black console will look right in my factory K10.
