Well I think I have found my problem. I had replaced the sm318 trans a while back and the trans I got had a problem with the tailshaft bushing. Someone apparently ran the trans without the bushing and the tail shaft was opened up from running it without the bushing. I tried to install a new bushing but it would just push in with my fingers. Ran it for about 500 miles and have removed the trans and am rebuilding it. Found the bushing had pushed in and was not even close to being on the driveshaft input shaft. I am going to use the old tail shaft on this transmission which the bushing has to be pressed in to this tail shaft. I believe this is what was giving me a problem. New bearings and will be putting it back in today. Everything seems nice and tight now. Wish me luck!!

Ureaka!! Vibration is gone. Ran for approximately 40 miles on 80 degree day and the temp on the pinion was around 140. I can push the clutch in at 60 and all is smooth. No more seat of the pants vibration. Trans works fine and is actually a little quieter in 2nd gear. 1st still whines quite a bit but I do believe it is the nature of these transmissions.
I appreciate all the input from everyone. I can finally say I am done with the restoration. |
