no it doesn't matter. stop worrying about the marks on your balancer. they don't mean anything because they are either for a different pointer location or for a different application. forget they are there. start from scratch and find TDC!!!

Check this one at Summit:

That's 14mm threads, I think that works for SBCs

Be real carefull with those, don't thread it in a lot on the first attempt. I've seen them break and sometimes the head needed to come off to get the broken piece out

okay, i couldnt find the tool so i used a couple different things i had around that would fit in the hole(nothing that would damage it or fall in)

like i said before, tdc is exactly where i believed it was at in the picture i attached on the first page.

i started over and turned it and put timing tape on it and set it to 12 degrees initial timing. the rotor points to the number 1 plug wire and it starts up fine. only problem is the battery is awful and was used as a secondary battery in a boat or something and everytime i crank it, it dims the lights real bad and has trouble starting, but it does after a second.

How did you figure where TDC is? The correct way is to insert your feeler, rotate the engine one way and mark on the damper where the timing mark is when you hit the feeler.

Then you rotate the engine the other way until you hit the feeler and mark it again. 1/2 way between those two marks is TDC.

thats pretty much what i did. i had a little tube that fit in the hole. i stuck it in there and measured how far it would go. on the compression stroke on the number 1 pistion, i measured until i got to the least amount it would go in.

Don't take this the wrong way... What cylinder are you using as #1? Many people forget it's a Chevy and not a F*rd. That would give you the position you are finding on the balancer.
