Re: 1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

I put fluids in the truck yesterday and finally started the truck. Unfortunately when I turned the key off the truck continued to run. I unhooked the battery (positive cable) and it continued to run off of the alternator for almost another minute. I have to figure out what is going on here. It wasn't dieseling it was full blown running. I have a new ignition switch in the system. I would assume it has something to do with the wiring somewhere. With that said I was happy because it ran and idled on it's own, I was pretty happy.

Thanks. I may wait to get a video posted until I have some mufflers on. It is pretty loud. The bodywork is a 20 footer right now. Just don't get too close, haha.

Re: 1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

Bled the brakes last night. Hopefully when I get back in the garage tonight there are no more leaks. Now that I have some brakes I will feel a little more apt to put the driveshaft in and put it in gear.

Unfortunately the darn thing still continues to run when I turn the key off. I put a new ground direct from the frame to the block. I also made sure the coil wire did not have power when the key was off. I guess I have to do more troubleshooting.

Great progrèss and glad to hear you got the engine fired up! I'm no engine expert, but I did a quick Google search and came up with this: http://www.badasscars.com/index.cfm/...prod/prd94.htm

Obviously, I can't vouch for the info, but thought I would pass along. You may also want to post something in the engine section here if you haven't already to see if guys can help you out there.

Thanks for the help. I have searched this site for some resolution and came up with quite a few things to try. I will start there and go from there.

Re: 1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

I checked the brakes last night and there was one little leak so I'm hoping the brakes are good to go. I also installed the driveshaft. One step closer to driving this beast again. I ordered a Lokar gas pedal and throttle cable.

I also installed a one wire alternator last night and did away with the exciter wire and additional wire from the EZ wire harness that ran to the alternator. The truck still continues to run when the key is turned off. I have looked through all of the posts to try and figure this issue out. I will just have to get someone down to look at it I guess.

Thanks Jim. I got the diode from work yesterday. My next question today was going to be "did I need a diode with a one wire alternator". I guess you answered my question. I will try this tonight.

Re: 1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

I got the gas pedal and throttle cable installed. Started the truck up and pulled it out of the garage for the first time in about 2 years. Lots of good things that came out of that experiment. The brakes work, the new driveshaft works, and the engine runs on it's own.

Here is what it sounds like started up and running.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vttnpdBmMMo

I also figured out why the thing continued to run. I had hooked my fan up to my coil wire thinking it was an accessory wire, stupid me. I cut that wire and now the truck stops when I turn the key off.

Re: 1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

I now have a new goal of getting this thing to a local car show the 23 of this month. Now that it actually moves I am one step closer.

I started mounting the bed again. I will also try to set up my air ride so that I don't have to take an air tank with me, lol. The fenders should go on tonight possibly.

Re: 1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

Worked on trying to setup my bedfloor last night. With the use of some good ol cardboard I started laying out the bedfloor a couple different ways.

I can't decide if I want to mount the air components towards the cab or towards the rear of the bed. If I keep everything in the back I can keep my floor at the regular height in the front with a flip up panel to see the PB parts. They are too nice to hide. Anyone have any opinions. I kinda like the idea of the last picture where I mount the parts in the rear and bring the notch cover down to encase the tank like it is part of the notch cover.

I am sure I will think of a couple different ways before it is over.

Mike, are u sure those are 69010 headers?? I ordered the coated set after i saw how they fit your firewall on the pass. side but when i got them the pass. header is different...look at this link and then your pass side...they are different....the ones i got are like the ones in link...pass side front tube goes over on mine and under on yours....the problem is yours look like they turn down more at firewall (pass side) and i think these will hit firewall (don't have cab back on yet)........thanx jim

Jim,
I got mine from Summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hed-69010 I do see what you are talking about with the front tube placement. The summit add doesn't even show a picture. I can take a couple more pictures of the placement in relationship to the firewall if you would like.

Re: 1970 SWB : Porterbuilt to the Extreme "Double E"

I put on the fenders, grille, and a bumper I had laying around. It doesn't fit the greatest but it will work for the show this weekend.

For some reason my driver's side isn't fitting up the greatest. I had to shim my core support on the drivers side to get the fender to line up. This kind of throws things out of whack. I will have to figure this out when I tear it back apart I guess.
