My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

The seat bracket is now welded in place and the seat bolted into the truck. I just have a bit more metal finishing to do on the tabs to hide my welds and make it all neat and finished looking. I put some cushions on the seat and sat in there and pretended that I was driving for a bit.

I did a bit of testing with some washers and found that for every 4 washers the seat went up, I lost one washers width on the angled kickup at the front. So I figured based on the fact that 4 washers was 1/4", I needed to have 2 washers of space along that slope. Of course this is based on my hoping that carpet and insulation equate to about 1/2".

I almost finished up metal finishing around my tabs today. The more I looked at the back tabs, the more I didn't like the way they were hanging passed the rod so I cut them back so the look like the front ones. I'm very happy with how it's coming together. I know it seems crazy to get so finicky with details like this, especially under the seat but with the cutouts in the side of the brackets and the fact that I plan to have amplifiers under the seats, someone might look in there and I want it to look good.

So a week and a half ago I got my center console mounted for mockup purposes and forgot to post about it. and also today I managed to get the passenger seat inner bracket rough cut to size. The console was mounted using nutserts as I am not a big fan of self tapping screws. It also has such a cleaner look to it. Before I could cut the passenger seat bracket, I had to do some fine tweaking to the seat temporary height rods to ensure that the top of the backrests were at the same height.

I made it so that when I flip it onto the firewall, it will help to evenly distribute the weight. It will also give me a point to attach it to my cart so that I don't have to worry about it falling over.

I scored this today locally! It has a bit of a curve but I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to straighten it. The worst part is the large dent in the lettering but I think I can fix that up too. The best part is I haven't seen any rust holes or signs of one starting.

Great thread, really liking the work. You've come a long way with the welding and it looks great! Isnt it interesting how many fractures and stress cracks seats get in their life? My bench needed nearly every spot weld redone and had many stress cracks

I pulled my box back out today and started adding the required support pieces I need to properly fasten the press board the rest of the way. I also added some pieces to pickup the fiberglass corner sections. I plan to use nutserts for those. I didn't quite have the time needed to get it put all back together as I have a few more pieces to put in and need to weld everything on the back side yet.

Tonight I went over to my parents place and helped my dad bleed the brakes on his '69. We were hoping to take it to the local car show this weekend but after going for a test drive, we will not be able to take it. Unfortunately a botched transmission rebuild is making it very hard to drive anywhere. It revs at 2500 rpm at only 40 MPH along with plenty of other issues. At least the brakes are now nice and solid. Here are some pictures of the truck

It's been a while since I checked your project, I love the bucket seats and mounts. Very nice work. I have the stock mounts and the drivers side adjuster tend to get a little slack in them with age and rock side to side.

Hey thanks for checking back in! The sloppy side to side motion is what really got me started on the whole idea. My dad's truck has the factory sliders and his has the side to side rock as well. I'm glad you like the brackets, I think that they will look almost stock in there.

It feels like I've been away from here for too long, almost being on page 2 and all. Life had me busy with other responsibilities and such for the last few weeks. I had to take care of a bathroom renovation that was well needed, which is extremely fun when it is the only bathroom in the house. I'm hoping to be back on once a week with the truck but who knows what the rest of the summer will bring. Might be a little tricky sticking to it with kid #2 on the way in September but all will be good. The wife and I are looking forward to it and also dreading it at the same time.

Today I jumped out into the shop for the afternoon and started back on sanding.....sanding.....and more sanding. The plan is to get the whole inside of the cab sanded down, filled and primed before baby comes and I have little time in there. We'll see if I can make it happen. Wish me luck.

Well the inside of the cab roof and dash are now sanded down and ready for filler. I will need to sand a bit more around the rear window after I pull the seats as they are in the way. I am also going to cut out the speaker openings in my door pillars so I can sand and fill the kick panel areas.

What sanding equipment are you using? A DA with 80 grit? How about getting in the nooks and crannies?
