Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Thank You. Already found a repo set on Amazon for $46.
Thank You Rian. I am pushing as hard as I can to get as much stuff done before my vacation ends. I really wanted to have all the bed panels done and mocked up on the truck but that might be a long shot. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Worked half day today and my body just gave out again. So I went inside and helped the wife with some chores and hung out with my boys.
Got this ready for some metal 2 metal. ![]() My buddy John talked me into doing bodywork on all the bed panels so here is the start. ![]() ![]() When I block sanded the driver fender I had 2 high spots near my patch weld so I knocked them down gently but accidentally messed up some of my metal 2 metal so sanded it down and reapplied some more. UGH. ![]() Next up was working on my cross sills. I was originally going to sandblast them to bare metal but after looking at them and cleaning them up they aren't that bad. My FIL shot these with red oxide primer when he repainted the truck. What little rust I did have I shot with Rust encaspulator. Will let that dry for 24 hours and then prime and shoot them satin Black. ![]() ![]() ![]() Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
This all I got done yesterday.
![]() ![]() But I did a little better today. Last day of vacation. Back to the rat race tomorrow. ![]() ![]() ![]() All sanded down. Need to block them and put glazing putty in a few places and then one more coat of High build and block again and see where I am at. ![]() ![]() Forgot to take a pic of the fender before high build. ![]() ![]() ![]() Starting to look more like a truck. ![]() Really proud of this Driver fender. It is by no means perfect but much better than the mess it was. Can't wait to get the driver door done. ![]() ![]() Got 2 coats of Satin Black on the bed sills. ![]() This tailgate is a mess. It is bowed, which I think I can get most of it out its only on the top. It has several deep dents on the bottom that I will have to drill a hole and use the slide hammer to pull out and then weld back up. ![]() ![]() The bow in the top. ![]() Someone used it as a workbench too much. SMH. ![]() Pulled out the other bedside and started stripping didn't finish but got a good start. ![]() It is in alot better shape than the other side. ![]() ![]() Both stake pockets need some attention. ![]() ![]() ![]() And that concludes my vacation progress. Thanks for stopping in, Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Started today off cleaning out the "sanford corner" beside my shed. With all the bed parts nearly gone from it except the passenger fender and bed strips it is pretty well emptied out.
My bed strips needed some straightening. Also the rear bed sill is in terrible shape. I never really looked at is since I took it off the truck. I am going to straighten the best I can for now but it needs to be replaced. ![]() ![]() You can kinda see my cleanup in the back of the photo. If you look real close you can see the line on the fence where the bedsides where. The fence still looks new. The bed sill looks like it was run over by a train. ![]() ![]() Bed strips all hammered straight. I will have to buy at least one as my BIL cut the very middle one to install the stupid rear gas tank he fumbled together. ![]() After some hammering on the middle of the sill. It looks a little bit better. ![]() Still bowed like crazy. ![]() And the tailgate is bowed the other way. What a mess. ![]() ![]() ![]() After messing with it for a little bit started on the bodywork for the driver bedside. ![]() 6 applications of filler later and it is looking better. ![]() Ready for some primer and then some blocking and probably a little bit more mud in a few places I missed. ![]() I was able to knock 99% of all the dents that where in the top rail out. ![]() ![]() ![]() That's it for today. Thanks for looking, Bret

Blocked the primer and sprayed a coat of high build after work today. Still have a few low spots to fill.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Last night I blocked out the High build coat. Still have just a few small places to fix with glazing putty.
![]() This morning flipped it over to finish stripping and welding up the holes in the rail. ![]() ![]() I also ground down all the spot welds on the angle strips and where the stake pockets are attached. ![]() A small mix up of metal to metal for a few of the spot welds and the holes I welded up on the rail. ![]() This is about as clean as it is going to get. ![]() ![]() There are some really hard to reach places that really needed to be sandblasted but I didn't really feel like messing with it. So I hand sanded them the best I could. ![]() I put it face up for the first coat of primer so I could get a good coat in the top part of the rail. Even the factory did not get much paint in there. ![]() ![]() The strip you see left unpainted is where I applied some rust neutralizer. It has to dry for 24 hours before a topcoat. ![]() ![]() After lunch I drug out the passenger bedside to finish stripping the outside of it. ![]() ![]() ![]() By 5 o clock I had it looking pretty good. This bedside is in much better shape than the driver. Just have a small place at the front to weld and knock down a few dents. ![]() ![]() ![]() That's it for today thanks for looking. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
The UPS guy dropped off some boxes today.
![]() Just about everything I need to put the stepside together and finish my driver door. ![]() ![]() Unfortunately the door skin was damaged during shipping. I my opinion it wasn't packaged very well. Going to call Classic Parts in the morning and see what my options are. I might be able to get back to where needs to be just irks me to get a new part in damaged. ![]() Tried out the glazing putty on the bedside. I love this stuff after one application. Goes on super smooth and sands real easy. ![]() ![]() Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Started off this morning with another session of glazing putty on the driver bedside.
![]() Another coat of high build. It's not perfect but it is pretty close. ![]() ![]() What it looked like before. ![]() Some bodywork on the passenger bedside. ![]() ![]() Also this morning I called customer service @ www.classicparts.com. I had a no hassle conversation and have a new driver door skin headed my way. The damaged one I boxed back up and they said if UPS did not pick it up by next Friday it was mine to do as I please. No cost to me at all. Wow fantastic customer service. Kudos to them. In this day and age it doesn't happen as often as it should. I have been buying all my parts from them since I started restoring the truck in 2012. I have never had any issues with my orders until this one. They took care of me and so I will continue to order as many as of my parts as I can from them and pass on their customer service to other truck guys. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I'll 2nd the quality of service from Classic Parts. When I ordered my complete suspension kit for my 66 one of the ball joints was missing the rubber boot. Needless to say a 5 minute call later and they had another one on the way free of charge. Nice work on the bedsides!

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
The last couple of evenings after work the temps have been to cool for any bodywork so I started stripping the rear passenger fender. It was the last lonely piece sitting outside in the sanford corner.
This fender has at least a quart of Bondo on it. ![]() ![]() ![]() One small tear at the bottom I will need to weld up. ![]() You can see the thickness of Bondo. This was all along the top and the whole back side of the fender. ![]() The bottom half back had bondo to cover up these 2 holes which I assume where for the rear wrap around bumper that was on the truck when my FIL bought it. I have a picture of it. ![]() Picture of said bumper. ![]() Got it stripped about halfway last night before I lost sunlight. Will finish it up today. ![]() I also sat the front of the truck back down on the ground I had it still sitting on jack stands from when I was installing the brake lines. I have never seen its front stance with fenders on. It sits pretty good with just one coil cut off the spring. I still need the rear lowering springs as I have a over the top rake right now. All the hours of welding, grinding, bodywork, and sanding are starting to pay off. ![]() ![]() Suppose to warm up to 70 today so maybe I can squeeze some bodywork in this afternoon. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Slept in this morning for the first time that I can remember. My body always wakes me up at 5am. I guess it needed some extra rest this morning. So a late start but it gave the weather time for it to bring the temp up high enough to bodywork.
Passenger bedside. ![]() My goal is to get as much body filler sanded off as possible but still let it do its job. ![]() Not quite perfect but pretty close. ![]() ![]() First coat of primer. ![]() Finished stripping the pass rear fender. Found a small rust hole right in front of the wheel well. Not sure what caused it there is nothing behind that spot on the inside. ![]() ![]() I have my work cutout for me on this fender. There are several big dents in the top that will be hard to get completely out. I will have to put quite a bit of body filler I'm sure. ![]() Hit the fender with 80 grit on the DA Sander. ![]() You can see all the dents and rust I will have to deal with. ![]() ![]() In this photo on the bottom rear you can see a whole bunch of small high spots that appeared after I sanded it. My theory is they were caused by rocks and gravel being kicked up by the rear tire over the last 50 years. ![]() You can see more of them in this photo. ![]() Thanks for stopping in, Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Getting things knocked out. Glad to see the door skin issue resolved quickly, not very often do things go in a builders favor.
Looks like a little hammer and dolly action to fix the reverse dents from tire/rock kick up. |
