Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

working two jobs does indeed suck, if you need any help, you know the number!

I got the 41 moved in the garage, and the s10 out of the back yard. I will start a new thread in the pre 47 area.

Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

Thanks for the offer. Not sure when exactly when I'm going to get out to the garage I am also going to lay down some flooring in my basement.

I saw a post in a facebook group I belong to of a guy who has a 54 chevy 3100 original and running truck here in Wichita. He wants 3K for it. I looks like its in primer, but he says it has rust on the cab corners and the floor and running boards. I'm not in the market but thought it sounded interesting. Looks like it has the original seat and a floor shift.

Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

maybe I mentioned it, but maybe I didnt. when I put the new wheels on the LAST lugnut on the LAST wheel galled and snapped the stud on the spacer. I didnt want to drive around with a broken stud on a spacer, so I ordered new spacers and new lug nuts. for whatever reason though, the spacers didnt come with ET lugnuts for mounting, which I thought was strange, but I already had ET nuts on the spacer I was taking off. turns out, that the new lug nuts I bought for that wheel galled the threads on the spacer studs! I went though a whole spacer of studs and three different lug nuts before I realized the only ones that went on without a problem were the ones they sent with the spacers. they are all 12x1.5, and all three (my two new styles and their supplied style) fit the factory stud just fine. still annoying, I started the day needing one new stud and now I need 6.

that was beep nap time, had family dinner after that. when I came home I tried a trick bartymous (bartman) mentioned, cranking down the sway bar on the low side, I still had a 1/4" chevy lean even after fixing the passenger spring. whaddaya know, it works

tomorrow I am finishing up some interior stuff and I have a couple lookee loos at buying the truck. I have been offered a couple hot rods, one was a 71 nova big block! but I am holding out for now. these trucks are white hot right now.

Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

I'm glad the sway bar trick worked for ya. Tells me I need to hunt up a sway bar for myself now. I didn't get much done on mine this weekend. Took Friday off and got the carb rebuilt and put back on. Ran some vacuum lines and plugged some vacuum ports not needed. Removed some of the unneeded Emissions fittings from the intake manifold, Need to get some plugs to fill those holes. Ordered a swivel thermostat housing. Saturday, I was worn out so just took it easy. Sunday Working 8 hours at my second job. I sure wish I could win the lottery so I just work on old trucks all the time

Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

well I think there is a guy coming 1600 miles next week for this. he had some specific finishing requests, so I am doing them. charge AC, running board gap seals, new door seals, and wipers. crap. wipers.

I made a fair effort to hook up the vacuum wipers before I put the gauges in, since the brake pedal mounts make it impossible to access from the bottom of the dash. but the little slide switch on top broke and rain-x works so good.. so I had to pull the gauges today, fair enough since the backlighting was too dim, gonna try some strip led with dimmers. and the speedo was a little off, I figured the offset for a 3.08 rear with a 3.42 speedo, not realizing the ecm was a 3.73. oops, its about 4 mph slow. anyway, I have seen these screws before

gauge access

I had a couple extras and tried hooking them up to vacuum but none worked. they turn back and forth by hand but my guess is they should turn a lot easier than they do.

see what bowtie has in stock monday I guess.

while I was in the driveway I chopped the firewall section for the 41

Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

bowtie bits to the rescue!

bolts in nice, and the lower brace that ties to the dash brace makes the wiper motor a structural member. no kidding, this is the stiffest the dash/pedal has ever felt.

almost hooked up, has E clips that my tired body couldnt manage to get clipped.

I had to bend the wiper arm just a scootch to get the arm on the bushing, so I need to straighten the end.

also got the door seals glued on, wow what an amazing difference door seals make. I picked up the correct 96+ fullsize truck AC lines today, the expansion valve is right in the way of the intake. YAY.

Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

so I learned a lot today.

the e clips fought progress.

I noticed that the bushings werent seating in the wiper arm.

rather than modifying the arm I sanded the bushings a little. success!

same for the passenger side (remember we are looking up backwards

and gave it a try. it didnt work. the passenger arm was binding over center and that is me helping it when it gets caught.

shortly after that video the passenger e clip/bushing exploded.
the instructions said bend the arms but I didnt want to put an "s" in the arm, it would work like a torque absorber. I decided to cut the offending 3/4 inch out of the arm.

of course the gasket was tenuous before and disintegrated after. I made a new one from some neoprene I had laying around.

after running for a new e-clip,

I should have known when I was assembling it that the passenger arm would be trouble because it barely squeaked onto the pin and only when it was really shoved outboard. lesson learned, if its tight dont hope.

I took off the old rusty light switch so I could get to the windlace screw (look on your 49 and pre49, there is a hole in the dash on both sides for a screwdriver!) and the dash was looking pretty poor, so I sanded out the scratches and that run from the first paint and I will coat it tomorrow before I put the gauges back in.

dang your wipers have a great sweep. I have the newport motor and mine aren't as swifty as yours. guess they need some adjusting, but it's been good enough for me. Driven in many many rains (I feel outta 10 times I have truck out it rains atleast 6 of the times). just my luck. Sux about your lug nuts. home stretch, any little hickup gets annoying.

I bet your passenger arm is too long. if mine didnt go over center and bind it would have only had 60% of the sweep.

That looks a lot like the rig several guys have made by using the rear wiper motor off of a blazer. Might mount a little different but the lever and arm mounts are very similar.

Re: 49 3600, s10 swap, project boogie

thanks everyone!

I banged up the dash a lot so I grabbed a can of paint today

turns out I used satin, it dried and looks really nice though so I am leaving it.
finished up the doors, the lower door seal steel pieces were rusted and all the screws stuck, so I hit bowtie bits again for them (only $6? sign me up).

dont mind the missing panel, I forgot the screws.

the running board seals are a weird assembly, my first time doing it. the rubber is sandwiched between the top of the bottom of the rocker (does that make sense?) and a steel bracket. since the bracket had the screw retainers, I took a chance that the rocker would have through-holes and used the grinder to just zap the head off instead of working like a doofus with a stubby on old rusty screws. I was right, and it worked great!

the rubber is not prepunched, so I was wondering how to do this sandwich while laying on my side trying to find the screw holes in the steel. I decided to grind the head off of a nutrunner and sharpen it to a punch. the seals came with new steels, so I lined them up. worked perfect, my tech tip to you! I will use it again tomorrow when I install the windlace that doesnt have prepunched holes.

grabbed a stainless mirror while I was at bowtie bits and stole the mirror arm from the GMC in the back yard.

while I was at walmart (only walmart carries krylon ivory gloss, go figure) I stopped by automtive and got the perfect LEDs to brighten up the gauges. I will install them on their own switch that is only active with the lights on.

tomorrow is filler neck day and then dash reassembly. I hate working alone because I really need someone to push in on that chrome strip on the windshield to get the screws started. need a son or more realistically a son in law. haha.

talked to the buyer tonight, he will be here sunday or monday! lots to do.

What did you paint ivory gloss?

haha I think its hilarious when I cant get out of my own way sometimes so I dont mind sharing. The wheels and the dash are krylon ivory gloss. I needed the door panel screws (10-24 coarse countersunk for anyone who needs them) from home depot, and every time I go I try to see if they have a rustoleum ivory close to the krylon, there is a test panel I did a few pages back that shows the difference. today they had an "antique white" that looked right, but only in satin. I thought it would be funny if I got to walmart and there wasnt any krylon ivory gloss, its a very popular color and last couple times I bought the only two cans on the shelf. so I picked up the rustoleum satin as a backup. walmart did have just two cans of gloss, so I got them too. when I taped off the dash I grabbed what I THOUGHT was the gloss. when I came out later I actually thought I had grabbed krylon satin at wal mart by mistake. nope. I had used the rustoleum. lucky it matched!

and thats the story of how I am an idiot.

I hear ya on working alone sometimes it's handy having an extra set of hands, I do pretty much everything myself but that's because I hate to ask people for their time, yet I really don't mind sharing my own. Anyway the truck is wrapping up nicely. Great job!
