Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Well i have a plan to fix my fuel usage problem............FAST EZ EFI system. Self tuning and i dont need a computer programer to adjust stuff. I know factory will give more mpgs but this hould get me to 12 mpg i hope. I like the look it has now and dont want to piece stuff together for mouths. I was going to buy a second car and just drive that to work but what is the fun in that. Justs dumped several grand under the hood so i dont want to let it sit and only injoy it every now and then. For what i was going to spend on a 87 s10 blazer today i am more then half way to the new efi system. And everything around here is junk or way over priced any way. http://www.fuelairspark.com/ezefi/default.asp

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Having just done the EFI retrofit last fall, I can tell you that you will love the results. I wish I had an LS motor under my hood to put it on! I don't know a whole lot about the FAST systems, but I can tell you what I know about the Holley ones. I have an older Commander 950 TBI setup, but the new systems are all self tuning. Below is a discussion on the chevy talk page comparing the two systems (FAST and Holley). That site has a ton of great information on it, and a few of the guys there are straight GURU's when it comes to Holley EFI. They will get you fixed up if you ever have a problem. There are even some Holley employees on.

http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/259486/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-550-401/?rtype=10

This Avenger system is priced right and does not require the use of a laptop, but you CAN hook one up for data logging or more advanced features if you want. It also has an autotune feature that has gotten really good reviews.

The throttle response, cold weather starting and driveability are unbelievable once everything is dialed in. From what I have heard it only takes a few hours to get where it took me weeks tuning by myself.

One thing to keep in mind is that you'll need return fuel line and a baffled tank to prevent the pump from sucking air. I think about half of my effort was getting my fuel system up to snuff, which was a PITA with two saddle tanks. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a 87-91 tank (baffled) for your suburban.

Good luck, EFI is cool.

Well i have ordered a 5.5 power valve and a 4 hole 1 inch spacer. Dont the 4 hole spacers help with low end power?

Would be nice to have a few more horses down low. My rpm at 65 is only 1700 or so. So would pull hills better.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Got the spacer and power valve in mail today. The spacer has a grove in it to sweral the air to better mix it the box says. Also says will help gas milage maybe. Dont think it will..... Any ways also got a 5.5 power valve. May help with mpg as well. Hope it keeps O2 gauge away from the 9 zone.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Well i have some bad news............... The horible fuel milage i am getting has forced me to sell my...............CARB!!!!!!!!!!!! I just put in an order at sumit for a FAST EZ EFI MASTER KIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the most expensive thing i have ever bought in my hole life. They price matched atlanticspeed.coms price even the free shipping! I LOVE summit racing. Should be here in 2-3 days! My beautiful wife practicly made me order it. Cant wait to install it and am hoping for around 12 mpgs! Hell anything is better then 5-7. Prob could poor the gas on the ground an get more then i do now. Will keep yall posted on the install and mpg inprovement.

Shame you didn't just run the stock fuel injection set-up on the LQ4 - would'a been in the hight teens to 20's mileage wise... Let us know how this EFI set-up works out though - gotta be better than the carb!!!

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

no doubt it would have gotten better then 5-7mpg.....but I do doubt it would have gotten 20's or even high teens. we are talking about a 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban here. My LQ4 powered '01 AWD Sierra C3 never saw close to 20mpg unless it was traveling at 55mph. More like 12-14.5mpg avg.... with 16-17.5mpg highway.

I wish you would have spent a little more time learning more about what you had, what you needed, and getting it dialed in....because at 5-7mpg it certainly wasn't. I'm still thinking your vacuum advance (MAP table, MAP sensor) wasn't even close to working right.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

I know it is not going to get 20 ever. I will still work on timing odviously i have to. I will still be putting my power valve in and the carb spacer. Also oil change and timing this week end. I am just not sure what to do with the timing. I cant really take it to the drag strip to set timing like a lot of people do. All i can do is drive it around. I need to figure the timing out befor the efi goes on any ways or it to will not work all that great i am sure. Now or later it was getting the efi. I am just hoping for atleast 10-12 mpg.

[QUOTE=68GMCCustom; I'm still thinking your vacuum advance (MAP table, MAP sensor) wasn't even close to working right.[/QUOTE]

Now was driving around the other day with my computer hooked to the box and if i punched on it the map reading would go higher. Now i was always told i was going to have less vacuum with the more throttle. The needle went up. I have a factory lq4 map sensor on it and it is a one bar. I will verify this weekend but i am sure the numbers got higher.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

MAP is manifold absolute pressure, or atmospheric pressure minus vacuum. Less vacuum means the absolute pressure goes up, so that is how it should be. Sort your fuel system out before the EFI install or you'll have a mess on your hands. What PSI does that system require? All the rubber hoses need to go if it is more than 5-9 psi. I'm betting it is in the low 20's if it is similar to my holley setup.

I have all stanless steel braded hoses now but the master kit comes with all the stuff i need like the pump, regular, new hoses, fittings, relay kit, and controller. I think it runs at close to 58 psi. That is why i got the master kit so i did not have to worrie about the fuel. It even uses the same size as what i have. It is a more modern system then the holley. The holley is like a gm tbi with the injectors on top of the throttle blades and the fast is under the blades so they spray directly in the plenum so it mixes better just like a new car but not so close to the head.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

That will be nice...but sure is spendy! Heck....seems like you could have found a complete LQ9, LS2, or maybe even an L92... with fairly low mileage for what you're spending. Then you could have sold your complete carb'd LQ4 to recoup 1/2 or so of the cost? Unless you're just set on the carb'd look, but efi's benifits?

I'm just thinking your LSx conversion project is getting close to $5k now...and its all still based around an unknown..... an older (7+ yr old) salvage motor. Versus spending that same amount on a newer/newish one?

Just curious. What all changes did you make to your carb? I think you changed to bigger jets (more fuel) but never changed the accellerator pump squirters or cams? On mine, even with the 750 HP Street Holley...the motor wanted 37 and 40 size squirters...vs the 28/31 it came with. Cruise shows good (slightly rich) afr's...so I may not need a jet change...just squirters, pump cams, and maybe an earlier(4.5 vs a 5.5 to 6.0) power valve. That will give it the power shots it needs...w/o ever changing the main jets. If I do change them, I'd probably only go up 2 jet sizes. Will it ever get good mileage...nope!

Yes i do have a bunch of money tied up in all this. Probly closer to 6 now.... I could have gotten a new motor for the price but from what i seen inside of this one it is all good. I went used cause someday i will be building a bigger engine. But at that time i will not drive it everyday.

The reason i went with the fast ez efi is the look and the ease. If i ever do blow this motor up i can just swap in any motor i want and have efi on it to. I was going to do a ls1 intake and factory efi but that would just look out of place on my old burb. Maybe if i was doing a hole body off on a 2wd i would but not this one. My plans are to bet a swb and do a factory efi swap for my daily driver one day. I dont want to have to send my ecm out and have it programed or buy a tuner to do it my self every time i do a mod on the motor. For the price i could have gotten something else to drive but i did not want all the money i just dumped in to the burb to just sit there and do nothing.

On the carb i have now put a 33 nozzel in came with a 31, Went from 65 jets to 69, and untell today that was it. Today i installed a 55 power valve and 1 inch 4 hole spacer. I was going to put 68 jets in it but the jets i had turned out to be 66. I now have a traction problem buy the way. Also put the smack down on newer dodge hemi today on test drive.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

So i installed my carb spacer today and my 55 power valve. And did its first oil change. Oil was bark brown and noting fell out of the pan or was stuck to the drain plug. Used a acdelco 46 oil filter. About 6 quarts of 5w-30 valvalen oil. The rear tire sure does spin easy now. Any more then 3/4 from a stop it will spin. Used to take almost to the floor to spin it.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4

Oh ya i for got to tell yall about the major milestone buddy had this weekend....HE PASSED INSPECTION ON THE FIRST TRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First year he needed new exhaust, e-break, horn. Second year he needed e-break, powersteering leak fixed. This year he studied hard for his test and maybe had a trick up his massive sleeve. I replaced the hole rear break system and new steering box. When the inspector pulled the truck in for some reason he opened the hood and said HOLY CRAP and everyone in the hole shop stopped what they were doing and had a 10 min shop meating. One guy asked me if i payed 1000 bucks for just the msd box. Ha! They are 300 bucks. Hate to see where he shops. Maybe the motor destracted him from his inspection but he passed and that is all that maters!

may have gotten lucky.....one of the shops near me will consider it as a newer model truck if it has a newer engine in it. they make it have all the emissions stuff that came with the engine in the 1st place....regardless of vehicle age!

You talking about the inspection? Here i asked last year and they said that it is a safty inspection and they not really woried about all the engine stuff. What would be the difference in putting a big block in it? Just consider it all highend racing engine parts.... Was a little scard that they would tell me i needed a cat.
