Re: 1969 Short Wide

Time for a long overdue update. I have been hammering hard on this cab most of my free time in January. Golf only when the time and weather allows.
I started by stripping the cab. I don't see how anyone would want to part out these old rusty trucks? It's not for me.
I have a pretty straight rust free cab (seen earlier in the build) but I wanted to see how hard it would be to fix this one. Probably a bad decision but it is what it is now.

So this is what I'm up against.

Started cleaning up the bottom side. This is not for the faint, undercoat is a pain to get off. I use a propane torch and razor scraper. then finished it with the wire wheel. It's slow going.

Removed the rockers to sandblast areas that I'm saving.

Re: 1969 Short Wide

I sandblasted all the areas that have rust issues. Then moved it inside. My plan is to repair all the rust, paint the bottom and start body work.
Nice rocker panels

Out with the shaved driprail cab in with the not

Some of the new patch panels from Kenny's trucks. (thanks Kyle!)

Re: 1969 Short Wide

One thing I recommend before cutting any panels out, take lots of measurements. I record them
with a Sharpie on the metal. You will see it in some pics. I think the fit will go smoother if you measure everything before the cuts, during the tack up and after weld up.

Re: 1969 Short Wide

Replaced the rear support. This was tough to make fit. None of these patches are a quick fix. So far the best piece is an old Tabco corner from the early 90's. It fit great and is the proper thickness. Not a fan of Key plus so far.

Sheetmetal I'm using from the scrap yard to fab this patch.

Nice progress Mike.

Those floor pan patches you got look much better than the ones that came with my stepside.

The ones I have are all wrinkled up at the curves. I don't want to use them and will probably order new ones of better quality. Have a link the where you got yours?

Looking good! Did you get bored? I really like the older tabco stuff. I've had of their stuff lately that was as bad as Taiwan crap. I've had real good luck with tri-plus patches for these trucks. Keep up the rust repair my friend!

It's really not too bad, it takes way longer to make the parts fit than anything. I am further along. I just ran out of time last night with pictures.

Thanks Mike,
I recommend you try Tabco and specify only USA made parts. They actually use taiwan parts when they run out of their own. I am considering buying the passenger side pan from them.

Besides, I need the practice because I have 2 Camaros with lots of rust.

Not bored just motivated. I never liked the shaved driprail. I just figured the rust would be that bad. As you know the deeper you go on these the more rust you find. You need to call Tabco if you're using their parts, they will substitute the Taiwan parts if they are out of stock. They do still make some oem thickness grade panels from what I understand.

Thanks Mark,
You are welcome to look at what I did to make the drivers side work. It needed lots of love to get it installed.

Mike I am worried about your health... 2 Camaros with that type of rust is too much for any one person... Since I consider you a great friend I am willing to take one of them off of your hands... as a favor to you... :-)

Screamin,

I really don't think it will be a problem... he is selfish when it comes to those cars...

Of course we could do him a greater favor by taken them both.. :-)

Good work Mike. I'm not one for the shaved drip rails myself. That's why I sold my other cab, but those that dig that look, rock on!

Keep it up, you will be driving that thing in no time.

Thanks Steve, Yes it would have been easier to install a new driprail. But, keep in mind the dash panel was trashed, cab corners weren't the best, completly covered with dents, no chrome mounts for the paint seperator, etc. etc. I didn't know it was as bad as it is until I got into it. Landen wants the shaved cab for his upcoming 68 shortbed. so win-win, lots of shop time during the winter. Plus adding metal skill building time is always good. Would I buy a "rust free" cab today. HELL YES!

It's all good guys, I guarantee when/if I sell either, they will go to board members.

Thanks Steve, that's the goal. I want to be driving it 2012
If I wouldn't have sank so much cash into NOS parts I would have gone stock/modified. I want the showroom look but modern drivetrain

Thanks Drew, I would love to have an Arizona truck at this point. It's really not as bad as it looks. Just a little time consuming. It is winter, and I don't have a lot going on. The fact is, the old cab would have taken a bunch of time to get it ready for paint. Where's that build thread? I haven't found it yet?

I forgot about that on the Tabco stuff. It's been a little while since I've purchased any parts from them. It looks like the Camaro list is quite long. Cough, cough.
