Re: Any farmers / tractor people here?

I like my bx25 does everything I need . On the rare occasion I need bigger friends have a couple of cat excavators and larger kubotas. I grade my driveway with my neighbors 70 year old John deer dozer. Fred likes the Kubota too

I guess I was mistaken, it wasn't an 8N. Was it an NAA?

Re: Any farmers / tractor people here?

Man, I just sold my father in law's two tractors. Older one was a late 70's JD 1050 4x4 with front loader. Newer one was a 2010 JD 4105 4x4, hydrostatic drive. The 1050 had 1700 hours on it and the 4105 just 182.

I spent untold hours pulling a bush hog, spreading gravel, etc. on both those tractors. I was the caretaker of his 80 acres the past 20+ years.

Re: Any farmers / tractor people here?

I often see a tractor and think "I'd sure like to have a small old ford or massey tractor to mess around with". Then I remember, I don't have anything to do with one if I had one.

Jim - My wife asked me if I was sure I didn't want the 4105 and I told her a 40hp, 4x4 tractor was a bit oversized for our 2.5 acres. I could sure make the neighbors jealous but beyond that I didn't know what the practical use would be.

The neighbors on opposite sides (100++ acres) both have 30-40 hp Kubotas. I've used them both and while a lot better than a hand shovel, they leave a lot to be desired IMO.

I'd like to get something older in the 60-100 hp range with a big 3 pt blade to grade driveways and plow snow. There's no substitute for weight and horsepower.

Re: Any farmers / tractor people here?

Bill living out in the near country as you do an old tractor would be right at home. Picture it out front with Christmas lights or with a trailer behind with hay and pumpkins in October and November. Although a 2010 isn't considered an "old" tractor yet. It will be some day.
I don't know why I've always been attracted to tractors being I was raised in the city. I just like mechanical things and what a guy can do with them. I only have 1 flat acre but if I had a tractor I bet I'd have a yard as smooth as any golf course.

We have 60 acres now. But most of it is so rough that you couldn't even run a brush hog on it.

So the roads are about the only thing to use a tractor for. I did use my little tractor for skidding out logs when we first moved out here, but I've found that it's just as easy to get firewood by carving out some trails and getting my pickup in there. I haven't tried to start the old Case in years now. It needs the rims and gas tank replaced.

I could have a classic car, but I went with a classic truck so I could use it.
We have 3 acres, so I could use an old 8n to restore and use.

Jim, except my wife is the ultimate anti-hoarder. She hates clutter and doesn't like "dust catchers" in the house. I think she secretly would like to get in my shop and "help" me clean up. I tried to get her to let me bring home the horse drawn John Deere cultivator from the farm and got a big "no" on painting it and putting it in the yard.

Re: Any farmers / tractor people here?

how about an old JD horse drawn planter converted to three point hitch?

there's a whole treasure trove of old equipment rotting away on the rock ledge down by the old barn from 1800s, sadly also rotting away

I sure wish I had the knowledge and talent to restore and preserve all that history..

difficult to believe I lofted hay in that barn with my dad and fed cattle out of it..

still 'standing' on limestone foundation blocks with mortise n tenon joints..

Re: Any farmers / tractor people here?

Killer Bee, the cast iron lid with that Deere logo ran from 1936 to 1950. Deere changed the logo a few times through the years so it’s pretty easy to date it. Many tractors were restored but the last several years the machinery restoration is taking off. Quite the old barn.Think of the skill it took to make it.

Re: Any farmers / tractor people here?

Killer Bee nice barn . Just in my nature but I would have it fixed the bones look to be solid ,but I'm partial to old barns been doing the upkeep on mine had a new roof put on about 10 years ago . Need one corner upright beam has a little dry rot on the second floor. It's 40ft plus all one piece . Looks like I'm going to have to piece it. Local guy rebuilds these type of barns and hes booked solid

If your not going to rebuild you should consider selling it to such a guy ,he goes around the country buying barns that aren't going to be repaired. So he can fix others, and he pays good money for old timber
