Re: 66 C50 Cummins build aka Big Stupid

Slow progress. Teaching and my metal business got in the way the past couple of weeks. Combine that with a no start issue and I kept putting off working on the truck. This is my first diesel so I’m still trying to figure it out. I had a fuel issue so I replaced some lines and the lift pump. Still couldn’t get it to run. I kept trying to bleed the fuel system and continuously got air. Turns out while working on the flatbed the other day I disconnected the feed line at the sending unit and didn’t get it all the way clipped in. Once I finally found that and got it fully clipped on the truck fired right up. I then went on to work on the flatbed and got it mounted. Have a little more work to do to it then I’ll be ready for the wood and hopefully start driving it.

Messing with some wood for it. Trying to decide how I want to do it.

Welded up some plate on the rear of the frame for the hitch. Also made a rear light bracket with a recessed license plate frame. Overall I need this to be done and out of my shop before thanksgiving so I can get ready for the Christmas rush of metal orders.

A little more progress on the flatbed. Hoping to have it done by the end of the weekend.

What are you using for your wood (type, dimensions, planned finish)?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

1.5” oak rough cut I bought off of an Amish guy. Wasn’t planning on planing it down, was probably just going to leave it rough cut.

I like the step idea, but that material looks kinda thin for a step??

The wheel tubs look great.

Yeah that was just some 16g for mock up. I usually make stuff out of the cheaper stuff first before I go burning the thicker material up.

I recessed the fuel filler and made a hinged door.

I sprayed the whole flatbed with Raptor liner. Think it turned out well.

Great work on the bed! Your wheel covers and bumper are very nice! I'm sure it is great to have it this far now!

Big Stupid looks great all across the board, job well done! curious on your driving feedback (i.e ride, handling, maneuverability, braking etc.).

I still haven’t driven it a whole lot. Steering wasn’t good but that was due to being low on fluid.... being excited to drive it I forgot to check the level, now it seems fine. Braking wise I still need to figure that out. It feels like I’m not getting any assist from the booster. Hopefully it’s something minor. I changed the check valve at the booster with another one I had laying around that might have came off of the dodge booster so hopefully now they’ll be better. I’ll find out next time I drive it. I need to get a working temp gauge in it first before I venture far from home.

Re: 66 C50 Cummins build aka Big Stupid

Appreciate the feedback, no doubt it will take some time to dial things in. Compliments again on a job well done. It's not easy to pull off a great stance and look with these trucks. I've seen many where the cab looks good but the bed never seems to quite look right but you have nailed it!

The truck is looking awesome! Good to see it running and driving around. Any photos of how the interior turned out?

Haven’t finished that yet. The plan was to spray Raptor in the cab a tan color to match similar to factory and just make it a work truck.... but this Cummins with a 4” exhaust from the turbo back is so damn loud I might have to rethink it. I had the seat sewn up to look like a 72 Highlander seat. Here’s how it turned out. I have a backup seat in it currently but once I get the cab painted the good seat will go in.

Hey doing a similar build motor (6bt-2wd 47rh) wise. Can you explain a touch how you made the engine fit? From what i see with mine (i have a complete ac core to engine in the frame still) i need to make up 15 inches. Just see what you did. thanks

Sorry for the late response. I made my own engine mounts but it basically fell into place. Overall nothing had to be cut or modified other than the trans tunnel and the piece on the firewall where the two pieces of the trans tunnel bolt up. I made a new hump and welded the two pieces together so I could eliminate the bar than ran across.
