Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

I found a guy on Ruff Rodders who is working on a '66 'Burban and is using a International Scout II gas tank and it looks like a sweet setup. From what I have researched it's 19 gallons and looks like it fits well. Only problem I have had is finding a new one, they all seem to be Poly and not steel. Here's some pics,

Just throwing out another idea.

BTW, the tank for the Bel Air you list also comes in steel, at about $160. Might be in your budget.

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

Thanks for the tip Mike! I am going to look into that tank also, I didn't even think about Scout tanks. I thought about the steel one as well, I just know that I will be replacing down the road because of rust although I think I might just take the chance and save the mulla! Btw HRH is an awesome build! I have been following it for awhile.

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

Cool, thanks for the props.

Yesterday I actually started putting parts back on the front. Got the front cross member installed and the first coat of paint on the frame.

Like you I have been looking at different tank options. I have been looking at things for over a year. Really didn't want a Blazer tank due to hanging down too much. Just doesn't look right to me. Scout II tank is looking promising to me.

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

I am toying around with another idea about a tank, kinda came to me yesterday. I am going to scrap metal place today and see what I can find and hopefully fab something in the next week. I will keep you posted. It's just a collection of thoughts in my head at the moment I need to commit it to paper :p Btw if you ever need a hand, give me a shout!

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

What is that black coating on the frame??? Mine has it too, that suff is a bear to get off (sandblaster=easy) . it doesn't grind, just smears. screws up welds real good too...

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

I think that is undercoating from the factory. It hardened out over time but is a bear to get off, on my most of it came off in flakes because it really "dried" out and the rest I wirewheeled which did a good enough job.

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

Glad to see you're back. I had wondered what happened with the build.

Making slow progress on mine.

Oh, I did buy a fuel tank. I arrived but I haven't gotten to that point yet. Need to finish the front suspension up first. Check my build for the tank I ordered. Think it should work out well.

Thanks guys!! I appreciate it.

Now I have all of your builds to go through and catch up. For the moment though I am underneath my Mustang trying to replace my clutch while my truck is sitting outside neglected, pure heartbreak, pure heartbreak hahahaha

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

Ok it has been awhile since I have been able to post here. Way to many other things happening. I did get the rewiring done though! I finally have headlights and my horn honks without have to turn on the headlights! The PO was a real piece of work with the wiring. I tried to make sense of it but I ended up riping it all out and just making my own with a few upgrades of course! I did put the relays on the headlights and I also upgraded to the new alternator so no more ammeter but now with a charge idiot light, definitely has more juice, the headlights are finally bright!

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

For anyone who wants it, I have my old fusebox for you for free. Not sure if it's worth salvaging so if I dont hear anything in like two weeks, its going in the trash! Has the voltage regulator and horn relay as well, both work fine.

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

Well some difficult news guys, my wife was just laid off from her work so it's just me now working. Which is going to mean overtime and little time for my truck. I guess if she can't find anything soon I am going the same route as ChiefRocka and I will be selling mine. Hey, I am not complaining, compared to what others on here go through especially Alan, I feel blessed for what I do have! Maybe we should have a section on here were people can work on their "virtual" truck HAHAHA.

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

Man sorry to hear about your wife's job. I know we have been waiting for 5 months whether my wife would have a job or be force on strike. Still waiting.

Hopefully you can hang onto the truck. Even if you can't afford to work on it for a while, if it's paid for, it really doesn't cost anything to sit there and in time you will be able to get back to it. Of course bills come first so you gotta do what you gotta do.

Good luck and hang in there.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the support. We are doing it day by day and my bed is in parts so that is my "excuse" for hanging on to it for the moment, but if we need the money it will be time to sell it.

Re: Project: SUT (Simple Utility Truck)

hey I hear ya on the truck being apart, I tell mine all the time that since my back isn't 4 linked yet no one will buy a half built frame, and the rest of the truck torn apart. I do have over $6000 in just the frame alone with it not being all the way built, and would never get more then $5000 for the whole project the way it sat.
