Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

From the fused distribution block to the compressors at the rear of the truck I plan to run 8AWG. I plan to run a seperate line to each compressor. This might be excessive, but I want the circuits to be independent .

Rockford Fosgate #RFK8 $33.80 compare to $59.99 for other brands

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

I won't need all 5 feet, but you take what you get when it's pre-packed. I "think" I have a spot between the battery and the core support that will work. I have to get everything laid out to see if it will all fit there.

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

I managed to spend some time with this last night. I wanted to see if my idea of putting the fuse blocks between the battery and core support would work. It's going to be really tight, but I think I can make it work.

This location accomplishes several goals. It keeps the 4 awg supply wire short, and it minimizes clutter under the hood. There is a power wire currently run in that area with a single 50 amp fuse and holder. I plan to run two fuse blocks to eliminate this single fuse holder and leave an additional dedicated power line for interior upgrades.

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

I found a piece of balsa wood from a previous project that looked like it would be perfect for mock up. After cutting and fitting, I was able to determine that this location is feasible, although very confined.

It will require removal of the battery to service the wires going to it, but I don't feel that will be often enough to cause concern. The fuses will be serviceable from the top. I do plan to make an easy access cover panel to clean up the are up some.

I ran a bolt in the center were the 4 awg will come through. This was used as a handle during mock up and will not be there on the finished product.

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

Progress was slow going tonight. I did not get a chance to get started till later in the evening. My mock up piece gave my the dimensions I need to transfer the plan to a scrap piece of .10 gauge cold rolled angle I had on hand. It seemed a bit excessive for the project, but it did allow me to drill and tap screw holes rather than have to use nuts on the back side.

Unfortunately I found out too late that I didn't have but one worn out steel blade for my jigsaw. I snapped it off before I even got started so I could not make the horizontal cut down the length that I need to make. Note that it is twice as wide as it needs to be because of this.

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

Im sure you probably know this but make sure you run a grommit in that bracket you made. Even if you cover them with wire loom, I would still run a grommit.

The holes have a smooth radius sanded in them already. I plan to ensure that chaffing won't be an issue. I don't think a grommet will fit, but a section of loom, or hose might. If nothing else, I will add a couple of layers of heat shrink at that point.

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

Most of you know that over thinking a project often leads to second guessing your plans. Since I have had several distractions that have keep me occupied, I have had time to rethink my objective. This time it turns out it was a good thing, it just meant that I had to make some changes.

I have had plans for a while to update my headlight system with a set of relays to provide a clean +12vdc source. While laying out the bracket for my " air pump x2" project I realized that I could incorporate the two ideas together. This will allow me to hide the wiring behind the battery along with several other wires.

Here's what evolved from all of this heavy thinking.

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

Thanks. I put this project on hold while working on my e3 install. When I get to the point that I need to wire the compressors, I will update this project too.

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

My first thought was to wire a Timer-ON-Delay relay in front of relay #2. Set the delay and you're golden. Any electrical house will have many styles to choose from. Most automotive timers are Timer-OFF-Delay, which could also work, but will need a different relay for the #2 compressor and a bit more complicated wiring scheme.

Standard industrial motor control circuit. Nothing more. The e3 LevelPro does the same thing only in PLC style. Which has a coolness of its own.

It appears to use premium quality components. Of course all of that comes with a price...

Re: Dual Compressor Wiring

I like The Accuair wire kit but it only comes with one fuse and one relay. So if one compressor goes out your other will not work either correct?
Thanks

Correct... if the relay does fail, it will cause both compressors to stop working. I recently talked to AccuAir about this at SEMA for the same very concern, and they said they have a very high success rate on the relay. They virtuality have never had any returned with failure. Like anything, nothing is 100%, but felt confident that the relay they are using will withstand the use they intend for it.
