Re: faux-tina paint jobs

There is a guy in my area with a mid 60's VW Bug with a faux patina job. It looks like the areas were sanded down to bare metal and then he cleared the whole car. Now its shiny with a patina look. Its cool, but when you get close you see the shine. That part I dont like.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs

I thought the faux-tina was soo cool I ordered the video from Trucks. They sent me a video labled faux-tina but it was just a recap of several other episodes. I called their 800 number several times and emailed several times and never got any response. I will never order anything from Trucks or Horsepower TV again.
Thought I would let you know before you get ripped off like I did.

Is it better/worse than the video I posted? I would expect the video to be more in depth than the online version. I got enough out of the online version to know what to do.

My truck has quite a bit of real patina, so I will use that as a guide if I get around to doing it.

Yeah, stick to the online version. Like I said, they sent me the wrong video then ignored all my phone calls and emails. No refund....nothing.

Damn, it was the wrong one all together? OK, that is a whole new level of suck.

<edit>This is a favorite of mine. I think I have talked myself into doing my truck, only following the existing patina pattern.

You got it! When are you relocating? I'm in Murry Hill, so not too far away. I won't be doing it until the weather gets a bit warmer (huge flakes this morning, good thing it didn't stick) and I get the rust holes patched up.

But if nothing else, I'd like to see yours in person and get some feedback.

Or if somebody has an opinion on something they think would look better I'd love to hear it, I'm partial color blind and not that great at matching colors up so not real sure how good it'll look.
feel free to use as photobucket, keep us posted.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs

I posted this up many times wish i had more photos. I am really not into the fake patina stuff but when i had my truck the body shop painted it red oxide primer and I ended up not liking the color. So I primered it all black and left the top part white. After sometime I missed the orange color and tried sanding it down and got to tired to finish the sanding and it ended up like this. Wish I had more pictures of it but got lost when comp crashed.

I figure I have the perfect flat black base coat for a faux-tina when this coat starts to wear.

Damn, I love it. I need to get my interior done before I do too much more on my paint. But I might paint the bed I got since it's mostly bare metal now.

Re: faux-tina paint jobs

I think Chizzler's truck is a good example of a well done faux-tina paint job. It seems like it should be easy to do but a lot of times they just look a little "off". The truck they did on "Trucks!" looked ok but I think they went too far with it. It looked better before they started adding the white and silver.
