Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

The more I think about it the more I kinda go that direction, too.

Plus not having to do a motor swap is kind of nice.

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

I agree,
Just from the few pics of the black one, it's a mutt.
The doors have been swapped (obviously), engine and trans have been swapped in, and who knows what else. The 73 fuse block has no provision for power doors, so it makes me wonder if the harness has been hacked or if it was actually done right... Same for the 700R4 lock up converter wiring...
The Dooley looks like a better start, but it's hard to know for sure from those pictures.

Then there is the Dooley parts that you could sell to recoup some of the purchase price.
You could probably get $300-500 for just the fenders and that bed looks clean too. I'd guess you could get $800+ for the entire bed with fenders.

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

I agree with Joe. The dooley fenders will bring a premium.
As far as the od trans goes it will be easier to swap in a od vs swapping in a diesel engine. Probably cheaper too.

OK. You guys have been rather convincing. The brown dually seems to be the way to go.

+1 on the dueley. i think you will do better going this way. a rear end swap is relitively easy.

Oh and there's no stereo system, just a block off over the opening.

Worst 4 hour drive ever!

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

Home!

Man, that was not the best drive

OK, so... I'm in love with the truck. I couldn't be happier.

Well... okay, yes I could. I've already come up with a mental list of things to address, some small some not.

1. RADIO.
Holy crap, I don't mind being by myself but a 4 hour drive with nothing but road noise almost drove me insane.

2. OVERDRIVE.
55mph or below? No problems. 65mph or more? The TH400 probably started to hate me. The power of the 6.2 was, in all honesty, plenty for anything I'll ever need. As a bonus, I made the ~220 mile drive on approximately 1/2 tank of gas. I filled up when I left with 16.6 gallons but it wasn't completely on empty, so my guess is that it's got 18 gallon tanks. 220 miles on 9 gallons comes out to 24mpg! I know I won't get nearly that driving in town all the time, and it's not an accurate measurement really, but even if it was 10 gallons that's still 22mpg highway. I'll take that. I'd like to be able to go with the flow of traffic and not get passed by semis though

3. SRW SHORTBED
Because duh. The whole reason I bought the thing. As of now, I'm currently leaning toward trying to find a 1/2 ton with a blown motor or no engine/tranny or something, and doing the "back half of the frame slid into the 1 ton frame" method. It seems the most foolproof method and my dad is a 30+ year certified welder so he'll be able to weld it all up and I don't doubt that it'll be stronger than it was before.

I'd also like to change the mirrors to the smaller ones, or possibly even look for a set of power window/lock doors from a newer square.

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

Oh.. PICS!

Sorry to the ranchers, but the first thing I did when I got home was grab a 1/2" socket and remove the mudflaps.

The guy I bought it from was the 2nd owner. His wife and daughters had named the truck "Butterscotch" -- I think that might stick!

OH... and there's only 1 cancer spot I need to address -- the rest is just small surface spots that will be dealt with easily:

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

I'll try to crawl under it tomorrow and snap some pics.

It's been a california truck it's whole life, but it has been near the ocean so that explains a lot of the little surface rust bits on the body.

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

Can anybody identify this harness? It's the only loose wiring I could find behind the radio opening. I'm sorta thinking I may have to wire the entire radio manually unless this is the harness for it.

Looks like a plug for a aftermarket radio to me.

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

oh, also -- this is my first diesel.

I wanna make sure I'm getting the starting procedure right. I make sure that the glow plug light has turned off, and then I let it cycle on and off one or two more times before I fire it up?

Looks like those wires are running to that box under the dash?
Is that some kind of radio component?

If it is warm outside, I just let the light go off then I start it up. After it starts, tap the throttle and it will engage high idle until it warns up.

If its cold outside, I wait for the light to go off. Then cycle the key to start the glow plus over and start it while the light is on. Then after it starts tap the gas for high idle. That has worked for me @25-30 degrees below zero without out the truck plugged in. It is much better to plug in anytime it's below freezing...

Re: Guess I'll finally post - searching for CCSB!

the box under the dash is an electric brake controller. it's hooked up and functional.

the harness is all I could fish out from behind the radio. Gonna try and trace it back to see where it goes later.

I was talking about the silver box you can see through the radio opening, not the brake controller mounted under the dash...
