Re: Chummins Build

Made some progress this weekend. Finished plumbing for the intercooler, clutch MC mounted and hooked up. Started on trans hump. And decided I was going to mount the battery under the bed right behind the cab.

This will be built for towing at a casual pace. If I get power greedy a turbo can be added later

I have had two 6.5TD trucks in the past and they treated me very well once the PMD electronics were sorted out.

That all said the Cummins is a lot more motor than a 6.2 ever will be!
I had an 82 suburban with a 6.2 that was passed down to me from my dad. ( first year, red painted engine) it had around 350k miles on it and didn't burn any oil! Only reason I sold the engine was the truck had a phantom starting problem (actually started cranking once with no key In the ignition!) that I chase for a long time. I sold the engine for $800 (!) but still kick myself. I wasn't "in to" 67-72 Chevy trucks yet (my brothers had several over the years, but i was into novas and el caminos, among other things) and it would have been perfect in a 72 swb step as a daily driver. That sub wirh the 6.2 and a700r4 got 20 mpg on the highway!

Up until the lates 90's, my dad and uncles all had suburbans and travel trailers, 26-32 ft. They have all passed away except for my dad. He will be 76yo in sept.

I had an uncle with an 83 sub with a 6.2 and banks turbo and a th400 with a gear vendor od. It would out pull my other uncles 87 sub with a 454 and th400.

Now dad has an 01 2500hd 2wd reg cab dura max and I have a 2002 crew cab 4x4 lwb dura max. There is no comparison to these trucks as far as power vs the 6.2!

In all reality, I would choose the LB7 dmax over the competing Cummins any day.

In my opinion the only thing the Dmax has over a cummins in these years is the availability of EFI Live for the Dmax. But that won't be a problems for the early CR Cummins soon. Either way, both are good engines and hard to beat.

Re: Chummins Build

I used two 12" fans on a newer big block radiator and they work great. From the little I have drove it, it stays right at opperating temp. and not any higher.

Re: Chummins Build

The cummins runs pretty cool so i am not too worried. In a bind I put a radiator i had in the barn on my buddys 55 Chevy p/u w/ cummins as well. The radiator was from a early 90 sunfire according to the part number and was only like 1" thick. He didnt have any issues with it getting hot and rarely had to turn the fans on for going 200*.

Direct injection Cummins don't require a big radiator. Now these IDI 6.2's/6.5's I fool with have to have a big 'un!

Start making decent power along with towing heavy and they need a decent sized radiator or the temp will keep rising which will raise the exhaust temp and could be a bad scenario.

Re: Chummins Build

Did order 2 10" fans as well as all autometer gauges. Got throttle hooked up by using pedal and cable form 1st gen s10. Ran around the block a few times and very satisfied with everything so far. Finished my tunnel and ready to start putting the interior back together. I will try to get n video or something soon. We had some crappy weather last few days

I got the donor truck last October and started stripping it. By mid November i had my c10 front end stripped to the frame ready for the swap. I didnt move over to this forum until February so kinda cheated progress.
