Re: Butchered radio opening! What'd you guys do?

Work has been demanding so far this week, so no progress. I'll get the other two done in no time and probably mail them to you two so you can modify to your need once I'm still not sure of original opening sizes.

Re: Butchered radio opening! What'd you guys do?

dougf I sent you a PM w/ comments on the measurements and a paper test I did. Happy to help w/ more measurements or to try out a plate on my radio and give detailed feedback. I might see if I know someone locally w/ a 3D printer and try making up a cad file and 3D printing it as a prototype so we can really dial it in.

Re: Butchered radio opening! What'd you guys do?

dougf,

I sketched up the holes in CAD and printed out some more paper prototypes. This one ended up working pretty well. It's not *exactly* right but it fit right over my radio with minimal gaps. I feel like any further tweaking is not going to result in any better fit.

NOTE: I did NOT test the 0.75" radius around the edges, I just eyeballed it.

PDF version attached.

Outstanding, thank you! I'm going to finish these today. What size holes are you recommending for the knob? I know you said 7/17, I went a little bigger (1/2) to allow for a little wiggle room assuming the nut and any trim price will cover it and still be secure.

Re: Butchered radio opening! What'd you guys do?

The main difference is I went with 6 1/4" between holes center to center (instead of 6 3/8) and made the knob holes 1/2" like you did.

Re: Butchered radio opening! What'd you guys do?

I made panels to cover the holes in my dash. The eight toggle switches feed through the heater and ashtray holes in the dash so I didn't have to make cuts for them. I drilled some holes in the dash but that was many, many years ago. I liked the idea of removing the ignition switch because these trucks are so easy to hot wire. You have to know what you're doing to start my truck.

Finally got the time guys! Just have two holes to drill and I'm done! Pm me your address and Ill get them out this week. They will need some fine tuning when you match them up to your radio with a file, but I did the best I could! You can drill to bolt then in, or weld them in loke I'm doing. I'm shocked nobody with an original opening has helped with measurements. Oh well!

I bet not too many people have original openings... some PO always hacks em up to fit in an FM radio.

Happy 4th.
Well, I'm finally doing it! It has taken me 6 years, and I'm sure I've done a terrible job so far, but I've actually started to fix the radio hack job. I'm using the piece you sent me LDO Thanks again for that.
Also thanks to Lugnutz65 for the encouragement.

I'm glad to see this thread kept on going with people finding cool solutions and making great parts to fix this issue we all seem to have to deal with.
Anyway see pics for my progress so far

Re: Butchered radio opening! What'd you guys do?

I did exactly what you did, found a wrecked truck about 8 years before and when the truck went in for paint, I gutted it and added the interior to the job as well as the radio hole. Then I found a radio delete for 64-66.
