I think that one belongs in this thread. That's a hell of a long horn. Pretty cool it still has the galles badges on it too. Great find thanks for sharing.

Re: Factory Two Tones ONLY (with NO white)!!

It was a sharp truck when new. The code 586 Special Two-Tone, Black with White roof and rockers has a very classic look. The red trim just adds to it. Here is the original paint scheme.

Yes it is. It is an oddball color scheme, you don't see around much. That's why I bought it. I have always admired your collection of trucks 1/2 ton to 1 ton and everything in between. That's what is so cool about this era of truck, there are so many varieties

Thanks. Yea this truck has about everything, including a fair amount of rust, it will be a costly restoration and these 3/4 ton trucks don't have the value of 1/2 ton or especially short beds So I just hold on to it because it is different than what you are used to seeing out there these days.

Ya know, I've looked at that great Longhorn/Camper brochure pic a million times and until just now, re-reading your post, it never dawned on me that was not LIGHT yellow and med olive (i.e. something that was produced). Never put 2 n 2 together and realized that that brochure pic never went beyond the brochure and into production. Too bad, it's a GREAT combo - begs the question - I wonder where THAT truck is today? I'd still love to see a black over ochre truck. Wonder if one was ever special ordered...

Re: Factory Two Tones ONLY (with NO white)!!

PICTURE REQUEST: Can someone that has an ORIGINAL PAINT one of these two tone trucks that we're talking about (i.e. no white) post a pic of the inside of the doors to show the paint break lines. Looking for the area in the vicinity of where the arrows are pointing - just from a more perpendicular angle and close so the break lines are obvious. My 557 has had its top repainted dark olive to become a solid dark olive truck - but there are remnants of the medium olive - and I THINK the original paint break lines, just want to confirm. I do realize that the below picture somewhat answers this question, but I don't know if it's original/factory or repainted. Also, want to confirm similar paint break around front by the a-pillar area of the door. Am assuming the paint break for the cab is under the rubber door seals. When I get around to painting, want to have some references to how the factory did it. Thank you.

Mark if no one responds I'll go to my storage garage on Monday and get you the pics you need. I looked through the pics I have of my truck but none have the the door edge.

Re: Factory Two Tones ONLY (with NO white)!!

thanks greg. I have a feeling the one above in white/red is correct - it matches the remnants of the med olive visible only on the inside of my truck, but still, not completely certain the inside of my doors hasn't been painted. I doubt it, but seeing just the little med olive stripe is a little odd (because it looks like they just squirted the outside).

Re: Factory Two Tones ONLY (with NO white)!!

The door window frame inner paint break is pretty consistant on the few late truck pictures I have been able to find just now. Most end about at the edge of the outer door shell flange wrap, about 1/2" in on the inside of the door. Conventional, Deluxe and Custom Two-Tone all seem to break the window frame at the same points. There is litle reason to expect they would differ between trucks built at the same plant in the same time frame.

The two-tone cab roof breaks do extend to the weatherstrip flange.

At this point I would suggest enhancing your request to include only original paint 1972 trucks (any two-tone pickup or chassis cab) built at Fremont "Z". Ideally in the serial number ranges of 130000-170000 as these will be the most relevant to your project.

Since Greg's 556 Highlander is both a Janesville assembled truck and a 21 yeqr old repaint I would not use it as the primary reference for your truck.

While the picure below is a 71 (3/71) from Fremont, it is pretty typical of what I am seeing from that plant in 71-72.

Re: Factory Two Tones ONLY (with NO white)!!

thanks everyone - they all look the same and that is encouraging. Most importantly, they look like the remnants of what is left on mine, so I think it's a safe bet that what I'm seeing on mine is correct.

Yea I guess I didn't think about the repaint. What does the Janesville build have to do with the paint, did they do things different at that plant?

There are always subtle variations in the normative build between multiple assembly plants. Most are generally unknown and often are vendor supplied part/assembly variations.
Some are clear and isolated to a single plant like Janesville's now well known "Deluxe" emblem placement.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=573974

The single best source of how a truck was built/painted/assembled is the truck being restored, if is in original condition. As a rule of thumb, since general documentation is so sparse, in a situation like this (correcting a modification) you need to use similar trucks for comparison. The best are going to be trucks assembled at the same plant on the same build date. Through observation and documention of other original examples you can establish a general normative build for a specific plant and timeframe. However this only goes so far. Rarely seen option installations or combinations can be difficult to establish a normative for.

But two-tone paint, being a very generic and wide spread option, is going to give you lots of examples (and variations) to sort though establishing how and where parts were masked.

As an example, take the inner door tape line shown above. Did Fremont generally have tight sharp masking with a clean edge or was the feathery blown edge in my example 71 very common (high %)? Or even the normative (most)?

While most people tend to idealize their rebuilds, some like to get the details as close as possible to "as delivered".

To that end, even if your truck was built as the very next serial number from Jocko's at the same plant, the undocumented repaint is open to doubt as to the location and completeness of the masking line in question.

Re: Factory Two Tones ONLY (with NO white)!!

Back to truck pictures...

First is a code 574 Cheyenne/10 Stepside, 525 Light Yellow (secondary) over 504 Medium Olive (primary).

Second is a special paint truck, 511 Ochre (secondary) on 521 White primary in the Special Two-Tone style but reversed. While it is a White truck the reversal is a striking change.
