Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

No real major updates lately. We finished the exhaust for the most part. Just needs to be finish welded and painted. I'll take some pics when it's all done. My brother snapped this picture at the shop the other day and I thought it was pretty cool. Just a few of the current projects:

1 - My nephew's 1941 Ford Pickup in paint booth (Jeep Anvil Gray). Also in picture is his frame. LS Swapped.

2 - My dad's 1940 Ford Pickup (Grabber Green). He picked it up on a trade and is building it, most likely to sell.

3 - Customer's 1936 Ford (Yellow under car cover). Basically finished and waiting to go to upholstery.

4 - Customer's 1963.5 Ford Falcon Sprint (bare metal). Cool build, lots of suspension stuff. Coyote Motor.

5 - My dad's 1932 Ford Roadster under car cover.

6 - My son's c10.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

How did you end up with two sections of floor? I forgot that there was a flat section on the front portion but it looks like you have two new sections now?

Well, initially I was only going to replace the front, then decided to do both instead of dealing with that God awful bed liner. I had already ordered the front section and instead of sending it back and ordering a full floor, I just ordered a rear section. Plus, shipping the two sections was significantly cheaper due to size.

I'm actually pretty impressed with how it all is coming together. They come longer than an actual full floor and both front and rear are stepped to mate with an original floor. We cut about 5" off the front. Will have to weld the seam and body work it but it wont be bad. Now all the sheet metal on the bed will be new except the bed sides.

Here are some pictures of the whole floor laid out on the ground. Also, a picture of how they are stepped and approximately how much we had to cut.

Interesting, I had no idea! I'm interested to see what type of coatings you put on which parts of the bed. I was planning on 4 coats of epoxy primer to the underside of the floor, raptorliner to the top side of the floor, epoxy to the underside of the wheel tubs, then paint both sides of the sides, front panel, tailgate, and top side of wheel tubs.

Everything top side will be painted and finished as nicely as the rest of the truck with the exception of the inside of the bedsides. They will sprayed with undercoating to add a little texture and then painted body color. Everything underneath is already or will be sprayed with undercoating.

One obstacle I am trying to work through in my mind is what I am going to do for a fuel door/cap. This truck already had a tank underneath the bed and the filler neck is dead center. With a steel floor bed, you have to deal with the ribs so I don't know what we will do yet. I have some ideas but haven't decided.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

No real updates. The harness came in but we haven't had a chance to work on the truck.

I picked up this steering wheel as a Christmas present. Also, the Hagan fuel door came in.

I like my Forever Sharp wheel too!

Did you get the American Autowire Classic Update or are you talking about the LS harness?

Just the ls harness. I did the Autowire kit on the last one of these we did. Good stuff.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Didn't take any pictures but got the power steering all buttoned up on Saturday. The boy is working this week on removing the old cross braces from underneath the original bed floor so we can install them under the new floor.

Had to order another fan relay and some other small parts (Transmission cooler lines, and Temp Sending unit) so we can get this thing ready to fire. Also, I figured out the radiator I bought didn't have an bung for the fan relay so I ordered one we will have to Heliarc it in.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

We got some stuff done over the Christmas break.

First picture is of the tranny cooler lines. I had a local shop sweat some fittings on them and I will run rubber hose to the radiator.

Second picture is of the steering wheel my son got for Christmas.

Third picture is of the engine with the harness all strung out. I still need to clean up the wiring but it is basically done. I bumped it over on Saturday which was exciting. Need to do a couple more small things like plumb the radiator and fill it with fluids. Also need to wire the fan relays and mount the computers but we should be making smoke by the weekend.

I know MDPotter just did that on his build. His thread is titled 1968 GMC - Ol' Blue. Shoot him a message and I am sure he will tell you how he did it.

Thanks. I am using the factory harness for the truck. The ls harness is from http://hotwireauto.com/.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Nothing real exciting from this weekend. I did get the engine and transmission computers mounted. Went ahead and just mounted it all on the inner fender. Reason being, I don't have much room under the dash with the factory hvac system and I didn't want to run the wires under the carpet. Long story short, I am lazy. Also, I still need to tie some of the wiring down.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Interesting little problem I have been having. Every since we fired this motor, I have been trying to chase down a check engine light showing low voltage to the MAF. I have tried a couple different MAF Sensors without any success. Started trying to figure it out, and through the process of elimination, I came to the realization the MAF connector was wired incorrectly. Just got off the phone with Hotwire Auto and we went over his schematic and he confirmed the B = black wire and C = red wire are flipped.

Interestingly, we are currently doing the same motor in another truck for my nephew and his was wired incorrectly as well.

I ran into a similar issue while doing an LS swap. I was using a factory truck harness but used the newer “card style” MAF instead of the truck one. Thought I had a bad MAF but it turns out that GM uses a different pin out (same plug shape) for the two styles of MAF. Once I looked at and compared the wiring schematics, I swapped the two wires and bingo.
