Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Well I didn't make many miles today. Stopped at a few places and enjoyed the scenery and tryed to relax a bit
I did look a 48 Chevy truck, probably a two ton with an as old winch on the back.
Really would make for a good restoration. Was in south St Joseph mo.

The truck ran fine but did have to add 3/4 quart of engine oil.
I am expecting the filter under the cab to fail soon as it seems to get plugged between 400 and 500 miles.

Got a room in Cameron, Mo. decided to park early and leave early. Have about 340 miles to home. Been on the road way to long.
Thanks everyone, I will make it home yet, Danny

Great job. I wonder how many of our trucks would make that same trip. Pretty sure mine wouldn't do it without something going awry. You are gonna make it.

Thanks Tutone, I will have to check out your build thread, when get home.
Yeah there is tons of small simple things that can go wrong.
Flying in and driving out is big gathering process, everything from a fingernail clipper to kooler, I felt like squirrel gathering a stash.

On the road again, Danny

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Well I finally made it home, around 11 pm last night.

I want to thank everyone for all the advice and support during the last 9 days while on the road.
And thanks to my supportive wife worried and waiting at home.

Was a very slow trip with lots of delays and time purchasing everything I needed for travel and possible repairs.

GPS RECORD
miles moving....1550
Time moving.....33.5 hours
Average speed.....50 mph

I had no more fuel issues but I did fill up at half tank as a couple members suggested.

From the start I have only stated the facts as they unfolded. The condition of the truck, and how it was running.
Explaining everything on this forum, I believe I have offended the po.
That was not my intention period.
I did so to get advice and possibly help from someone able and willing to help.

It's a real bad feeling to be 1500 miles from home withe a vehicle you just purchased and have trouble 50 miles in.

The engine desperately needed an ignition upgrade and a clean fuel tank.
I had to replace the ignition system and monitor the fuel system to have a chance of making the trip.

Before taking the truck on the road again, I have a long list of repair or replace parts and systems to deal with.
I don't want to explain everything the truck needs, I will say it needs a thorough, extensive preventive mantinance done.
The truck deserves that much.

Again thank all of you for the support and help.

I'm glad you made it home safe. I have been watching this thread and it looked like you were getting good advice. Good people here.

I've driven these old trucks all over the midwest and have had my share of breakdowns. I can't say I have ever had a bad experience with the people I have dealt with.

Yeah I will, it will probably take a year to laugh about it.
And a year to get the truck fixed right.
Just kidding it won't take a year to laugh, I miss the highway already.

Thank you Davischevy. The forum advise was great, good advise and I kinda didn't feel all alone. I did baby the truck the whole 1500 miles and kept checking everything. Thank you for keeping track of the thread.
I only wish I could have posted pictures along the way.

Glad to hear you made it home safely Danny, I've been out of the loop for a few days and was finally able to sit down and pass out candy. I dont know how to download pics from my phone either, I download them to my computer via facebook and then I download pics to the forum using the "Manage Attachments" button like "davischevy" outlined. It's "Go Advanced" then Manage Attachments, then choose the upper "Choose File" click on the pic and "download file" when you see the pic link in blue, close the window and submit your reply...That's my 71 1 ton dually I just picked up, has a 350 w/4-speed

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Hello iron angel. That was a very generous offer for me to count on if I needed the help.
Thank you so much.
I did manage to get home slow and easy but we got there.
The truck I just bought is a 70 GMC 3500 with single rear wheel axel, brake shoes in the front, ganny 4 speed, utility bed with an Alaskan camper on top.
You were right 1600 dollars will go along way in repairs, so thought about that and decided keep pushing. Thanks for that logical advise.

I will pm you my # and put you in my contact list.
I'm sure I'll be going your way again maybe meet up sometime.

Nice one ton you got there. Let me know if you need some parts for it as I have two one ton 72s that I am not sure what I am going to do with. The frame is bad on one so naturally a parts truck.

Will try the picture posting soon, it really bugs me that I haven't learned yet.
Take care, Danny

Right on Danny, glad you made it home safely. I was up in your neck of the woods a couple years ago, the wife and I attended an outdoor Mavericks concert in Mankato. I just bought that 1 ton last week and love that thing! I plan on using it for a tow rig for one of my 72 C/10's (drag/show truck) and an RV. It actually has a flip up ball for a goose neck trailer in the center of the bed. All the lights actually work too. It has a trailer brake unit (not sure if it works) and a micro-lock hydraulic brake lock that needs some attention. Motor runs and starts good, it has a leaky Holley 4bbl on it with an electric choke that actually works. I have a Performer manifold with the spreadbore intake and a good Quadrajet I think I'll swap on to it and see if my mileage increases. I'm looking for a gearvender overdrive unit to help with the mileage as well. It's a granny low four speed with a posi or LS type rear axle. I believe it's a spicer HO52 or HO72, I'm not sure yet. I love that thing! I look forward to meeting you one of these days at one of the bike rally's or truck gatherings up that way. Cheers!

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Wait a minute.......so the truck was OBVIOUSLY grossly over-advertised, and the PO took offense that YOU had issues on a 'turnkey' ride that was 'ready' for a cross country trip!!??

Somebody smack this guy in the face with all the old decrepit parts.

SEVERAL years back I bought a Trans Am off Ebay. I'm in Arkansas and the car was near Oakland Cali. At the time my older brother was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego. I explained to the guy that my brother was mechanically DECLINED and please make sure everything is good for a road trip. He assured me it was (just like your PO). My brother took a military jump flight up and drove the car back to San Diego until I could get out there to pick it up. Car made the trip no issues AND had new rear tires on it. The PO wouldn't even let me send him money for the tires, stating that they looked old enough that several hours at highway speed I 'MIGHT' have an issue. That's why he replaced them. Anyway, got out there on vacation and me, wife, and son made the 24 hour drive home with ZERO issues the way it's supposed to be. I'll actually be pulling the old T/A into the shop this winter to start restoring it.

Hello there, Myself.
Sounds like you found a good honest seller.
I only hope there are a lot more folks out there that have enough integrity and honesty like your po. That is how people need to treat each other. Respect and honesty is all I ask from people. I treat all people this way, I know I will get burned once in a while but my conscious is fine.

Thanks for posting in my white knuckle road trip.
And good luck with the resto on your TA
I'm sure you will be posting progress on here sometime, I will look forward to it.

Just my 2 cent's worth, Danny

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Hello again there IRON ANGEL
Sounds like you have a nice truck and a good plan for making it funner and cheaper to drive
Please let me know anything that would help with the ridiculous gear ratios on these granny 4 speed tranys.
I have been thinking of what I can do for mine also. It seems very hard to do, and make it cost effective. The more money you put into the drive train for better mpg and performance,
The more you have drive it to recoup some of the experience of the mods.
But a lot more fun to drive truck may be payment enough.

Please let me know if you come up with any good ideas.
And let me know if you ever head this way, I'll catch up with ya.
Take care.

But a lot more fun to drive truck may be payment enough.

Please let me know if you come up with any good ideas.
And let me know if you ever head this way, I'll catch up with ya.
Take care.

You guys might want to read through my thread on how I solved my gear ratio problem with the SM465:

Still working great 7 years later, cruising 65 & 70 down the highway at 12 - 15 MPG.

Glad you made it back with all the helpful advice these people gave you!! On the bright side, I'm sure you know this truck way better than you thought you ever would. Now you know exactly what it needs from the major issues to minor ones.
