well, i took off for the meineke shop (where my truck sat for a week), so i could start putting the exhaust back together.....

here is where my truck sat for a week - next to the dumpster at the meineke shop....

so the meineke guys are a really good shop.... they let me work on her in the shop and everything.... it was fun....

so i got nice and greasy, and borrowed a few of their tools.... it was nice.... i tried to take a few pictures under the hood as i was workin on it, but there wasnt enough light for the digicam (no flash on a $20 digicam)..... oh well...

i had to re-tap the two center mounting holes in the engine block because they were so crusted up from the previous rusty bolts....

they, i got the manifolds lined up and installed each one, tightening from the center outward.... the first time, i got the drivers side tightened, i realized i had forgotten the gaskets --- boy - i said a lot of cuss words then he he

once both manifolds were in position, the guys helped me learn to put the truck on the lift, and do the remaining work underneath....

THAT was the hard part.... and i must say, i couldnt have done the underneath work by myself.... almost every mounting point on the exhaust had to be loosened so that the exhaust tips could be located back into the manifold exits.....

we used donuts inbetween the pipes and the manifolds.... and we could have used a gasket, but it would have served no purpose - because there was too much space between the manifold and the pipe flange (i'll go take some finished pics today in the sunshine to show you the results).....

once we got the two exhaust pipes mounted back into position, the only thing left was to start her up, and test it.... after one false start (and having to re-adjust that stupid fan shroud so the fan would not hit it --- it gets bent easily).... we were golden.... it runs soooooo quiet and sweet.... i LOVE it....

i had one of the shop guys take a pic of me with greasy hands at the shop.... but it didnt turn out very good... here it is....

the final thing we did before i left for work that evening (saturday) was to adjust the driver's side pipe down just slightly so it wasnt rubbing my back bumper (which didnt really matter cause my back bumper has already been bent to crap as it is)....

here they are using the torch to heat it up
(i didnt do any of this, cause i didnt know how)....

well, today, i am off to a few places to show off the truck to those people who helped me out, and to see about a part-time job at the auto parts store next to the meineke shop (dont ask!)....

i should have a few more pics this afternoon of the finished work on the truck... as well as some pics of the people who helped me!

oooh --- i forgot....

in response to andy's inquiry .....

here is what its cost me so far for this endeavor....

$40.00 (+ gas) for used manifolds
$48.42 for parts and overhead at Bill's Performance
this includes paint, studs, bead blasting and acid soaking
$8.00 in grade 8 bolts and nuts at Ace Hardware
$2.48 for AAA batteries for my digicam (the old ones went dead)
$15.00 for parts at meineke
this includes some lock washers, donuts and nuts
$50.00 for labor and overhead at meineke since they
removed the old manifolds, and helped line up
the old exhaust to the new manifolds, and
lowered my tailpipe....
$163.90 TOTAL

which is not a bad price for the result.... you GOT to see the pics... its PERTY! (i'll post later)

Congrats on getting that thing together! Looking real good.

I don't really understand what you guys are talking about though with this sleeve. It slips down in my two inch exhaust pipe with no expansion or anything. The sleeve is tapered.

I'm a mechanical engineer as well. Graduated from University of Cinncinnati. Work for General Electric Aircraft Engines. I'll keep my ears open, but about all we do here is lay people off. All of our work is going to China and India..........

I was just askin in hopes that you wouldn't get ripped off.
All too often when a "chick" comes into a shop, they get taken for a ride. The meineke at fort hood (actually off post in Killeen Texas) tried doin my wife pretty good while I was in Korea. She needed rear brake shoes and brake cylinders, and drums turned, the quoted her 1100 bucks, and refused to put it in writing. They said that parts were hard to find for her ride. Yeah...hard to find my ass...this was a 92 S-10 Blazer...as common as parking lot gravel. My wife was in tears and called me in Korea (in the middle of the night) all bent out of shape that she wouldn't be able to drive again for 6 months (That's how long it woulda taken to get that kind of cash) I called another shop in Killeen and got it all done for less than 3 bills, and he even took payments too.
I hear the exact same thing from women who come to our shop looking to get there vehicles fixed.
I know you (jewels) aren't stupid, and you didn't just fall off the turnip truck, (she's actually like, WAY smarter than me, or anyone I talk to on a daily basis) but sometimes even ppl who know better get taken for a ride.
Not only were you treated farly, you got a pretty good deal, and I am pretyt suprised that they let you work on it yourself in there shop.
you need to show up next friday at about quittin time with some beer for the guys. They probably already have a crush on you...but they'll love you after that.

yes, i picked out this shop for that very reason --- because they would let me work on the truck myself.....

they wouldnt let me used some of the power equipment --- they insisted that they use the impact wrench and such (which is why they charged me a bit of labor).... but i was allowed to work under my own hood - which is my kinda place!

thats a great idea... i think i WILL show up with a case of beer --- except - i will show up on saturday, since saturday is more like their friday

hmmm... well... ok .... i'll have to give you that....

however, i DID happen to run into another customer the other day there who was just like me.... tryin to get some work done, but wanted to be involved in the mess himself..... (he wasnt bald, but he wasnt a year younger than 50)... and he had brought a case of beer, and was (drunkenly) talking to me about how great the shop is because you can get your paws greasy here.... and such.... now, granted, he had a few too many at the time, and it WAS a good thing he was finished for the day.... but i think that these guys run a fairly relaxed shop, unlike so many shops in the metro area these days....

so.... i guess i'm sayin that
1. i'm glad i'm a chic
and
2. its great to have a shop like this

I hope you realize how fortunate you are to have a shop allow you to do what you did. Up here shops absolutely refuse to let you work on your rig using their bays.

When I first started working on my truck I'd ask shops around my house if they'd let me work on my truck. They'd look at me like I had horns growing out of my head. I had one shop say they can't even allow "customers" to walk into their garage. They have to stand outside and wait for the work to get done.

It's totally organized around maximizing the amount of hours they work on your car, and leave you no room to learn anything about your vehicle. Hell, mechanics will even refuse to answer questions, or the shop managers won't grant you access to the guy who actually did the work. It's absolutely frustrating, and I'm pretty vocal about it.

...that's when I started investing in tools and learning everything myself.

Good luck with everything. Looks like you're doing good work.

I know what you mean Andy. I was never more proud of my ex, than the time I was out at sea and the throttle return spring broke on our car (1974 MG). The shop said she needed a new carb. She knew from watching me rebuild carbs, that about the only time you need a new carb, is if you hit the old one with a sledge hammer. She dinked around under the hood, used a paper clip to reattach the spring and drove home. I replaced it when I got back in port. I understand they are in business to make money, don't know why they feel they have to steal it.

Good job Jewels. I think you've got about 50 proud Fathers on the board, 20 brothers and a few that want to marry you.
