Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne

i got the u joints from fed ex today the shaft was delivered by UPS, unfortunately when i got the box from UPS it seemed really light and it was damaged with a bunch of tape so i opened it as soon as the delivery guy handed it over to me only to realize it was empty, the UPS dude apologized claiming that since the box appeared damaged it could have fallen out somewhere in the transport. I will call summit tomorrow and explain the situation.

At least the guy waited while you opened it. The UPS and FedEx guys who deliver to me don't even ring the doorbell. They just drop the package off and peel out. Sorry about the shaft not being in the box though.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne

Alex,
Question, If you only had enough cash to buy one Sata gun for Base coat Clear. Which model and size tip would you get? Or would I need a finer tip for one or the other? I was thinking I could get a cup for the base and one for the clear. I want to get a new gun before I paint my truck but don't have the funds to buy several different guns. My gun is so old it's a siphon fed Devilbiss. It was a great for single stage urethane but it waste so much paint it's not worth using on this job. Any help? thanks

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne

I would recommend the Sata 3000 hvlp with a 1.3 This would be an all around tip size if spraying solvent, for bases and clears. You dont need separate guns for base n clear if you dont plan on spraying for a living. just clean gun thoroughly after switching from base to clear. Since the launch of the 4000 series you could find good deals on Ebay on the 3000's. I just happen to like satas they work for me. Keep in mind that sata has a no price on line policy, and if you ever need sata acccesories like cups n regulators you most likely need to buy on line, or order from a distributor and if its not in stock it will be like 1-2 week wait. Alot of the guns i bought on ebay straight from distributors in Europe because they always have a better price than ordering from local shops.

I spray weld thru primer on structural steel with siphon fed guns and the switch to modern day gravity fed hvlp's is dramatic to say the least.

Thank you so much Alex for the help on the paint gun. I want/Need a new gun. I will see what I can dig up online. What kind of mid range paint do you recommend? I have had pretty good luck with the Dupont products in the past.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne

Dupont makes a good product. Since you like Dupont i suggest Nason/Dupont, with chroma clear. good product at a fair price and availability carried by any local auto body refinish shops. Take a close look at the Kustom Shop line, they have really sweet colors available and the price is right. Just dont skimp on clear always try and get the best clear you can afford.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne

So i managed to get the steering going. The origianl idea of goin over the frame using the double u joint was creating some slop or feedback, so i had to change the lay out and decidedto go directly from the column to rack eliminating any chance of feedback or slop. In order to accomplish this i had to cut back the top of the frame, i will reinforce this area not to worried about it, i had no other option, but the result will equal in crisp steering.

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne

I also startded blocking the polyester surfacer with 220 catching any last minute inperfactions and reshooting with polyester again will water sand that with 600-800 and spray the sealer I will use House of Kolor K3005 wich is tinted blue designed to help save material and $ when spraying a shade of blue candy or pearl. I called a PPG rep to ask if i could tint my deltron sealer, and he said it was not possible, so i will save that for another project. As for the clear i changed my mind on the dupont and i will use Glasurit HS.
as for the blocking method i could water sand the polyester the first time around and shoot the sealer as the panels are true and guide coat is coming off even, but i dont want any compromises not messing around with this finish.
I tested out my 100 BP and it handles polyester like nobodys business, lays it on smooth, so far i like this gun i still need to learn its ways to validate its worth

Re: LS1 into a 73 cheyenne

The KD3000 series of primers are designed to be intermixed with each other to tint the primer closest to the base coat color being applied. This is important in reducing the number of coats of base coat saving $ on expensive paints like candys and pearls also in the event the finish is chipped or scratched the damage area won’t be as obvious.
