Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

Hey folks, here's another update on a change I've been wanting to do for a LONG time. It's my alternator, it's only an 85 amp, been on the truck for 12 years and always kept the battery hot. It was fine when rpm's are up but at idle, etc it was below 14-1/2 volts, which most new cars show all the time.

The first pic is at 1800 rpm running down the road, 14-1/2 volts and the ac blower on.

Second pic is at stop, 600 rpm in gear and ac blower off, 13 volts.

Third pic is at stop, 600 rpm in gear and ac blower on, just above 12 volts.

This wasn't hurting anything, I just didn't like it that low.

Note: I took these pics in March and just now getting around to doing something ...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

So today I removed the alternator, and will take to the shop tomorrow and have them up grade to 105 amp. While this was apart I thought it would be a good time to change all the belts, since they are 12 yrs old.

First pic is the alternator
second pic is my 3 pulley set up for alt, ac and PS.
third pic is my old belts, gates 7350, 7500, and 7530, they really weren't that bad, but nows the time to change.

Will let you know how everything comes out once I get the alternator back and things installed...Jim

That will be a good upgrade Jim. How many miles in those 12 years?

Life always seems to change priorities in mid stream.
It's what's keeping me from getting mine on the road.
Good luck with the up grade.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

24,000 mi is still not to bad for a toy. Will a single v belt run the 105A alternator?

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

maybe someday I will have a truck long enough to

a. do maintenance on parts that wear out

or

b. get some kind of value out of all the new parts I buy

haha looks really great!

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

Well, I'm back with an update, but not what I had hoped. When I picked up the alternator yesterday, George showed me on his test machine it was putting out 102 amps and 14-1/2 volts. So I installed the new belts and alternator and fired up the truck. At idle it was only showing 12 volts, anything above 1500 rpm showed 14-1/2. I was not happy, this was really worse that with the 85 amp.

This morning I took the truck to George's shop and he said this wasn't right, it should show at leat 14 volts at idle in gear. He said that the new stator may have to much air gap between it and the rotor. He was going to call his parts people and get back with me, but it could be Monday before he has an answer.

My alternator is the old 10Si unit was orginally a 63 amp, which I had George change to an 85 amp in 1996. If this doesn't come up with an answer and no additional cost, I will just buy and new 105 amp unit and paint to match the other engine stuff. (That was the main reason for having it redone, I didn't want to paint the new unit).

I know everyone likes pics, so here's a couple showing new belts and gauge with readings.

I will let everyone know how it works out...Jim
