Coil & Ballast Resistor - Change the original 6-volt coil to a 12-volt type - use part # FS-770. A ballast resistor is now required between the coil and the distributor. This will insure that only 6 volts reach the ignition points or they will burn prematurely. Ballast resistor is part # FS-1008.
Looks like you are actually making the change to 12 volts. As you probably know, the 6 volt generator will no longer work. Also, be sure to change out the radio and all of the bulbs to 12 volt bulbs. Otherwise they will burn up. There might be other stuff (in addition to the starter and coil that you already changed) that is 6 volt. That's all that comes to mind right now, but then again, I never owned a 6-volt car. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

Good Luck!

Re: Ready to test engine start

Thanks. I am building this truck up from scratch after tearing it down. It was sitting for 10 years in New England. Plan was go original but the engine wasn't original so plans changed. Picked up a nice 235, runs great. Then decided to go to a 12 volt system. I plan to pick up a 12 volt ballast resistor from the local parts store (I hope).

Don't forget the gas sender and the heater are 6 volt.

Re: Ready to test engine start

This was an engine starting post and after replacing the engine it is running very nice. Thank you all. The ballast resister was placed between the starter positive and the positive solenoid along with an on/off switch. See picture. Will this drop the voltage and save the points as installed?
