Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

I got the frame painted and the axle back under it. Hooked the new leafs and the new shackles back up. I bought factory leafs and shackles, they fit just the same and I got a good deal on them. The frame is painted with Por 15 and top coated.

Here are some pictures of the axle under it before I started on the notches.

Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

As far as the exhaust, I'm going to have to change it up a bit because the diff is so tall that it is resting against the exhaust pipes. I think that if I route it away from the diff and closer to the frame rails I will have enough room to keep the exhaust exiting where I started the build.

Por 15 is a great product and like everyone says, its all in the prep work. It turns into a big job if you include all the prep. It would be a lot easier with the frame completely stripped down also. And don't get it on your skin! Its a pain in the butt to get off.

Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

Got the notches installed, they fit in pretty well. I cut it with an angle grinder. I left one of the bolts out, the one located at top center of each of the notches. I felt there was just not enough metal in the framer there worth drilling a ninth hole. It wouldn't leave me much metal for support. Some tips for anyone else doing a bolt on kit like this. As you are drilling the holes, at the same time do it your self or have someone help, but be spraying some kind of lubricant on the the surface you are drilling. I sprayed a burst of WD-40 every three seconds or so, and it cut the time it took to drill each hole down by a lot. Pay for the high quality metal drill bits.

Since the pictures here, I have gotten the new brake lines all done up and bled. New breather hose and differential fluid added also. More pics and updates coming.

Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

Thanks Jranger, I just got the bed on again (with the help of three other guys) and you should see how nicely the tires are tucked up into the wheel wells. It was exactly what I was looking for. I just have to get pics so you all can see!!!

Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

Well the top of the wheel well arch was at a tall 37'' but it dropped a little more than i thought, but its great! Got to get pics. Now I'm thinking of running out to the garage and snapping some fast for you guys, but tonight after plowing all day, I'm just way to comfy to run out through the snow.

Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

Progress is good.

May I make a suggestion? I highly recommend making & installing 'backing plates' for the notched area. Use the notches as templates & cut some flat plate to basically sandwich whats left of the original frame rail. Minimum .250" thick like the notches.

Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

So would these sandwich plates go on the inside of the frame I'm guessing? Do you think i will run into problems if i don't because this is how the kit came?

Re: 1978 GMC Sierra C35 "Project Second Life"

I would weld them in unless you think you'll bag it later on, it doesn't appear there is any material under the frame from the pictures.

The pictures that you all have been waiting for. Here is the rear end all totally done except for the shocks I'm trying to find. Here are some pics and also a link for shocks, they seem right, are they what I want?
