Re: Tripp's Speed Shop Build

Worked on my rear notch tonight a little. I purchased the Thorbeck 16pc notch your weld yourself.

That being said I would like to offer my opinion about the design and quality.

I paid $220.00 to my door (including shipping and all that)

I feel the design and material is sub par. Ive been working on one side today for about 3 hours; cutting, positions, leveling, releveling, cutting some more and then leveling again. None of this bothers me to the point that I wont use it, a little cutting was expected and is nothing Im not used to. What part of my issue is, the fact that its made of 3/16 mild steel for the main "crooked" pieces which is great! I can deal with that. The other 12 pieces are less that 1/8" steel. I feel when something is listed as 3/16" steel or whatever the size it better ALL be that damn size. I also fee that some measurement instructions should have been included for the "weekend warrior" who doesnt do this all the time. Im a fabricator for a living so I looked at it and figured it out. No big deal however, I looked at a few other builds that used this notch and they are in different spots. This started to worry me making me think, "shoot maybe my measurements are wrong, what If I mess up and my frame gets screwed".

All in all I will (probably) be using this notch and making it work. I just feel its not as good as others Ive seen.

Sorry, rant over. Thanks!

Re: Tripp's Speed Shop Build

Well did a bit of work on the truck tonight. Have about 90% of the rear notch welded up. All other supports out. Set the rear end aside. Debating of tring to find a 72 5 lug rear or just swap shafts in the one I have. I guess I have time to decide.

For some reason I can't find my camera. I think the wife hid it from me. As soon as I find it I'll get some pictures up!

Re: Tripp's Speed Shop Build

I know, I know. Need some pictures. I did quite a bit of welding on the frame and rear today. Talked with a guy about a really nice looking 5.3l ls for the truck as well! Going to go check it out tomorrow! I'll find my camera tomorrow and snap a few shots of the welding I've been doing for whoever is still watching my build. It's been real nasty out lately so I haven't been wanting to spend any time in the garage. Cooling down a little so maybe I'll get more done here shortly. Thanks guys!

Re: Tripp's Speed Shop Build

Did a bit of cleanin up tonight. Patched some holes and filled others. I'd like to have a 100% hole free frame when I'm done. When I get my suspension parts I will put the new ones where they need to be. Curious about what people think of frame boxing on these trucks. I'm not doing any high hp engine or such bit still curious about experience or thoughts with it.

Ok Rob, on a street truck....boxed is good....stiff and strong, big power or not.....4x4 boxed doesn't flex and flex is good off road....just this old guys opinion..

Exactly what I was thinking as well Dale. This is the first "street" truck I've build. Always built 4x4's, being from the mountains and all. Debating on boxing or not. Need some convincing I suppose.

Re: Tripp's Speed Shop Build

Did a little more clean up on the holes tonight. Also smoothed a couple of the welds around the notch. Not sure if I like it better smooth or with the welds showing there. What do you guys think? Of course I'll smooth it up a bit better if I do smooth it all out too...

And the date code
