Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

Quick update on something I've been workin on past few weeks. (still in progress) I wanted the centre bar of my '70 to continue to outside edges of frame, with lights inside if possible. I've never seen this done... maybe for good reason. I got my hands on a set of headlight assemblies from a 1992 grandprix gtp, and fabricated the bucket assemblies to hold it all. I ended up using 2 grille assemblies to do this. Just finishing the aluminum work off.. plastic inserts are fiberglassed and awaiting final repair. Aluminum pieces all stripped of anodizing and awaiting some tig work when completed..

Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

Wow... thank you cherokeeJohn. Very flattering.
These are somewhat build related.. had to stopworking on my truck to build them. (wife's Christmas present) Thought I'd share in case anybody else wants to get out of buying flowers... forever. Made from leftover 20 guage steel cut into 4x4 square pieces. Cut the 4 petal pieces, buzzed with a flap wheel on my grinder and bent to shape. Leaves made from same 20 guage, stems made from left over 1/4" brake line. All left bare steel and sprayed with clear coat when finished. The bolt that holds all the pedal pieces together, threads into the brake line. All from leftover project materials. She was grumpy with me xmas eve.. though I was working on my truck... again.

Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

Finished off with some polished brass pipe cut to resemble rings.. and I annealed some 2" copper pipe and hammered it out for final touches. Back to the truck now.

Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

Just updating my build thread while I'm having a beer and staring at it. All aluminum pieces were polished after stripping anodizing. The outer grille piece was going to be sprayed initially.. changed me mind.. had to polish it back after sanding it. (ouch) Masked it off and sprayed black lines and lettering. Light buckets were sprayed, installed and wired up. Made some bumper bolts with a poor mans lathe. (drill clamped in vise and metal shaped with an angle grinder) Polished when completed

Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

The frame tips I removed were reworked to receive the modified bumper/rollpan. Fishplates welded to them.. and mating holes drilled through the plated and frame. Secured with bolts.. slotted for adjustment.

Going to back up a bit.. The rad cradle and forward edges of fenders had to be reworked to make room for the grille and headlight assemblies

Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

The inserts were made with stainless rod.. and the frames were fabbed with 1" angle. Angle iron cut and shaped to match contour of the opening where it sits. I wanted the rod to continue from end to end with no visible reinforcement. 1/4" x 1" flat steel was used here. Holes marked and drilled for proper spacing of the rods... and then split in half with a zip cut grinder. They act as cradles, welding done on backside where it's not visible.

Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

The grille was made in 4 pieces, placed into opening and tacked while on the truck for proper fit. Removed and welded. Backing plates welded in for strength... and a spot to fasten future mounting brackets to.

Re: Project NiteMare-1970 C10 LWB build

This is how it sits.. not sure if I'll spray them black or polish yet. I spent about a week fabbing up plastic inserts from 2 factory grilles. Fiberglass work all done (except final work) Installed it and hated it.. lol. So this is where I wound up.
