Re: 88 silverado suburban

Thanks. Since I left the 2wd rear hangers in it, the rear sits about 2 inches lower than the front. Not sure if i want to put a bigger block in the rear or add a leaf. Probably wont worry about it for right now. I'm tired of spending money on little things and it sits like alot of old blazers I see anyway.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

Got a call from my driveshaft guy saying he didnt want to make a one piece shaft as long as I needed for the suburban so i ran my original 2 piece shaft to him and he is shorting the front half of the shaft and changing the yoke on each end to accept 1/2 ton U joints.

Hmm...I wonder why he didn't want to? It can't be that much longer than a regular cab long bed. Heck, I had one made for my crew. Burb is looking good.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

well he said he could make one but it would be expensive because he would have to use larger diameter tubing. I was trying to keep it cheap by having my old short bed shaft re-tubed with a piece of tube from an old car shaft.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

somewhere along the line i seem to have lost my brake lights. Used a test light to check for power to the switch on the pedal but there is nothing. The fuse is good and there is power to the fuse. I read somewhere that it could be related to the turn signal switch on the column. Anyone had this issue before? I did have the column out when i swapped pedals but everything else seems to work. Even the turn signals still work.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

Got the suburban finished enough to take home today. I barely made it though. My driveshaft guy thought he needed to add a second slip joint ahead of the carrier bearing and it let the bearing come out of the rubber.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

pulled the front half of the shaft out and welded the slip joint at the front of the shaft solid so the bearing couldnt walk out of the rubber mount again. I've put probably 5 miles on it so far and no problems. Did have to replace the carrier bearing though.

Here you can see the slip joint he added on the left and the factory one on the right. I'm not sure what he thought was going to hold the bearing in place with a slip joint on each side of it.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

And finally a picture of it back at home. Even though it still needs some work its a blast to drive. I get alot of looks.

I think it needs a little more lift in the rear but it doesnt bother me to bad

Re: 88 silverado suburban

Good job. I look forward to the mods and upgrades you may add to this as you put a few miles on it and you figure out what works well and what didn't turn out as you planned.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

Very nice job!!

I just picked up a 87 C20 crew cab that has been converted to a short bed. Then converted from 8 lug to 5 lug and dropped.

Now I want to convert it back to 8 lug but 4wd!! May have to just settle for 6 lug 1/2 ton though. Definitly want it 4wd though..

Any advice before I proceed on this adventure?

Re: 88 silverado suburban

buy a donor. It really helped me to have the donor truck for all of the hangers, shackles, axles, etc... And plan on it taking longer than expected. lol. Although my suburban was only down for less than 2 months i thought I would have it done much faster. Life gets in the way sometimes though and there were a few weeks that I hardly touched it

Re: 88 silverado suburban

Went on a long country drive last night to try to see if there is anything that needs worked out before I take this on any out of town trips. I did find one thing. As I was topping a hill in second gear i started to get a noise from the transmission. I was close to the house of friend of my wifes so i pulled in there. I must have lost alot of gear oil when i had everything apart. I put a quart in it that i had with me and drove back home. The noise seemed to have went away so hopefully nothing got hurt.

I have a 87 GMC V1500 4x4 single cab long bed I am doing a LS swap in so I can use it for measurements. I have picked up a bunch of 4x4 parts here and there already...

It is going to be a slow process b/c my ls swap is taking full priority.

I also have a 01 Z71 full roller frame I could put this body on and have IFS

Looks like I will be daily driving the suburban for a while. My boss gave me the day off yesterday for my birthday and while i was inside the house enjoying my day off a tree fell on my Dodge.

Re: 88 silverado suburban

Scored a one piece drive shaft with a slip joint from my local family owned junk yard. Found it in their storage trailer and its the correct length but has bigger U- joints so i'm gonna need some conversion joints. Best of all it was $25. Does anyone know what conversion joint i need to go from 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton?
