Nice shifter! All that should go together well.

Not behind a diesel they aren't. They don't like torque.

This is why I am thinking an Allison 1000 and a atlas would be a pretty sweet setup!

Although considering my budget, I may just have to stick with a 4L80E

I have decided though that this truck will be an auto. I have been spending a lot of time in traffic lately, as much as I love a stick... clutching it in the stop and go sucks!

I guess it depends on how you drive, but my 205 has held up behind an nv4500 and cummins for 4 years with no problems, and I don't drive it easy.
your truck is pretty sweet. all kinds of crazy details going on with it.

anything is strong, till it breaks.

I really like the bed rail cargo lights! You have got me thinking about something similar for my suburban cargo area!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

On the whole Atlas issue - how many 4x4 Dodge's, Ford's & Chevy's with beefed up diesels are out there running the stock transfer case they came with??? The NP205 is easily strong enough to go behind a diesel... If they're planning sled pulling, drag racing or rock crawling - then yes, go with an Atlas.

The bed rail lights will be a neat addition I think - not just for looks, but it'll come in handy anytime I need to load something into the bed at night - plus it'd look pretty cool at a cruise-in or late evening show too!!!

This is not mine, but thought some of you may want to see the WFO "shop buggy" that they're also building. They go to a lot of rock crawling & off road events - this'll give them something to advertise their work & some of their parts a little bit. I think it's pretty cool!

Not many are running NP205's. Look at any competitive first gen dodge cummins puller/drag racer. Most of the time they have newer aluminum housing tcases in them as well.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Yeah I know that - 205's went out of production. The point was basically that there are plenty of diesels running transfer cases made MUCH weaker than the 205's are. The Atlas is overboard - it's built for rock crawling & severe-duty off road vehicles for the most part.

If that guy already has a 205, he'd be best served (in my mind) in rebuilding it & maybe even adding a few upgrades as needed. The Atlas is NOT cheap....

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Nothing really to update for this week it looks unfortunately... Keven's still awaiting the return of the Guard Dawg module to go much further wiring wise. He has all the brake lines run all the way to the calipers & every other hose secured so all he needs to do is fill everything & bleed the systems once he's ready to fire the truck up.

He didn't get a full week in on this week again given some other needs in the shop - mine can't always be the focus darn it...

Our hope is that the first start-up will be happening next week, but that'll I guess depend on when he gets that module back & if any additional "gremlins" pop their nasty heads up before that can happen....

the 205 is a good case, the weak point that I have found on them is the input shaft, specifically on 10 and 23 spline versions, the 32 holds up much better, and it is for this reason that all later cases behind the 4 speed and the TH400 & 4L80E were the 32 spline. This version also had a larger input bearing.

I have run several of the 205's and even broke a couple.

The biggest problems I see with a 205 usually originate from being filled with water, being run dry, and being otherwise abused.

My thinking on the 79 I am looking at is it has a NP203 and a TH400 I want to run a Cummins, Allison 1000 and an Atlas. Why, simplicity, good strong parts, and eventually I can build that motor up more. It will tackle anything I attempt to tow. And being a regular cab, it will be substantially lighter than the crew cab, and be much better for city driving which I do a lot of.

I may just put a 4L80E and 205 in it, we will see, still haven't even bought the truck yet. Waiting for the VA to get my pay fixed, like I have been waiting the last 3 months.

It is still all a concept, your build here has given me a lot to drool over though. I have even considered going with a 6.0 because it would be an easier swap than the Cummins. I had also been considering the Vortec 454 with some upgrades. The one I used to have got 16mpg on the interstate religiously, I did enjoy that.

I can't remember, but what hood are you going with on this build? Stock or a cowl induction?

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Went with a Harwood bolt-on cowl-induction hood. We'll see how it fits - if I'm not happy with it I'll go to a steel version & use that one on my Daughter's 79 GMC project.

Oh shoot, that's right. Most of the Harwoods I've been around fit really well.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Yeah, that's why I choose it - always hear positive things. If I was going to go with fiberglass (for weight reduction) - I wasn't going to go with one of the cheaper brands that require a lot of body work to make fit right....

Once Keven gets his own computer & Solid Works program in he can slowly start designing my hood hinges too finally! It should be in soon - he's also got to design the rear bumper & a few other items.

Quite sure Advance Adapters or another manufacturer make an adapter kit just for that - if not they surely should...

No, the 205 attaches directly to the transmission. In my case I had to use an adapter kit from Advance to mate it to the later model GM NV 4500 we used.

As well the later model NP205 with the 32 spline input and 6 bolt round mounting patter is a direct bolt to the NV4500 these are found from I believe 85ish to 91

Maybe so, I think I was thinking of 32 spline sm465's with the round pattern. Here's a lot of info on 205's: http://www.wheelindixie.com/forums/s...92-np-205-info
