In the last 1 1/2 yrs or hard driving, trailer towing and a lot of fun cruising I have almost 16,000 miles with only an alternator problem pocking its head. So is it really low buck for a lot of guys I say yes because if you had this built for you at a shop it would be in the 30-40k range if not more depending on hourly wages.

Now I just ordered a set of bear front rotors and a set of performance on-lines alum dual piston GM calipers to try and get a bit more stopping power for the way I drive I have found the front brakes work great but fade after some fast twisty driving.

Let us know how those calipers perform in comparison to the stockers.....especially since it will be awhile until I can find out for myself

Will do and thanks again for the info on the calipers. What are you using for rotors? I went with bear because I could get them cheaper than most for the chamfer drilled, slotted through my Napa connection ($200 +- I think) for the set.

I'm using the "summit" brand ones. I think they were ~$50 each

are the bear ones stock diameter?

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

Kevin were you taking the back way to Napa? I like that road! I've used it a lot going home from a job in Napa when I80 is a parking lot.

I'm going to drop a 91 350 / 700R4 (camaro) in my 71 pickup as the 400 SB is about to explode. Do you know what I need for a trans mount / Xmember?

From time to time I take that road, it is a nice drive. As for cross members I think the stock one will work but you may need to move it forward or backwards to line up. I think the 350 mount will work as well. I used a full custom unit for mine so all bets are off.

Well I think I will be doing plug wires tomarrow, what do you think? The header gaskets are in and it sounds better but they are still cr@p headers. I found a leak in the radiator, it looks like somthing was bumped into it and caused a hole in a fin. I still need to time it and check the advance on the HEI. What should this timming be set at? It has been so long since I have worked on a carbed motor How do you like the seats (2005 Tahoe) Also parts that were tossed in with the deal. Has anyone used these for front seats?

Well their is now another 6.5hrs in this truck for a total 9 hours of work and 5 hours for pick up and off loading (both trucks and parts).

Total $226.20

Wow that was some time ago! Those seats are the rear seats out of a 7 passenger Tahoe/Burb. I ended up using them for the rear seats in my 72 4 door Tahoe build I am doing. They were not very comfy for front seats. What I ended up using for this truck was a seat out of a mid 90's truck with the 60/40 split and once it was recovered and re-done with seat heaters and sim-leather it just rocks!

Also I will have some up-dates today on this truck as it will be getting Bear's drilled and slotted rotors with dual piston calipers up front! Pic's to follow. I now have over 16,000 miles on this truck and it has been a blast and except for some alternator troubles in the beginning , it has been worry free. I just beat on it too hard for the stock brakes so time for an up grade.

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

Well wouldn't you know it that as soon as I was half way done with the front brakes it starts to just dump down rain. But I stuck with it and got them done and solved a few small problems along the way. First one was the mounting bracket needed just a small amount of adjusting in the opening to allow the caliper to move once it was bolted in place. I just took a grinder with a 24 grit disk and lightly went over the area to remove a small amount of material on the top and bottom bracket. Then the next problem was my rims (6.5" van rims) hit the caliper so a small mount of grinding mainly on the one bolt head was all that was needed.

I then went for a test drive and brake in run and the results are still out. I did about 20 miles with the first 5 miles being 35mph to 5 mph brake checks and the last 15 miles just regular driving. They started working much better and by the time I got back home they felt real good but with the wet roads I could not really push it yet.

Here are a few pic's.

Thanks Kev.

Another seat question for ya.

Do the seats you plan on putting in stick up above the rear cab window?

I actually do have a nice 1,200sq ft shop but right now I have everyone else's projects in their so I got stuck in the driveway And yes I have the easy up but I had other parts under it so no big deal, it was kind of fun.

2 houses ago I only had a small garage so I had two 20' awnings from Costo on the side of my house with 5gal buckets of concrete tied to each post. I came home from work one day to find the covers on my neighbors roof! The wind was so bad that day it broke all the tie down rope and lift off was achieved.
