as they say, the devil is in the details...

i surprised myself with the fit. i did a little tack up at work after i trimmed the hole. brought it home and it fit just fine. ill probably take the whole set up to work so i can tig weld the piping while it is clamped together. then the last few details and off to ceramic coat.

now is the time to decide on that possible upgrade on the hx35 exhaust housing. almost sure i am going to pull the trigger on the ex. brake too.

i made an order to summit a while back and to get the amount up over the free shipping number i tacked these -10oring to -10an adapters on. i put it together.



i also got this 2.5" oringed v-band set up i need to fit this Al flange to the compressor housing. the other half is SS so as to weld to my home made charge pipe. there is a 2.5" mandrel bend somewhere in the garage and a cone reducer to get from 2.5" to whatever size pipe i end up needing. have to decide what boots i am going to run for that.

its a 12-67 date of MFG. its mostly stock... haha. it has a complete GM driveline. tbi 454, NV4500, np205, 60f and 14ff. disk brake rear, detroit etc. old MT 40s for now. its my weekend cuiser toy. it is set up pretty well and drives comfortably at 65-70. i have an evil plan for it as soon as this green truck is done, but that will have to wait.

trying to get the turbo stuff done, so it can be sent to the ceramic coat dood.







cartridge rebuilds are in the works. both were serviceable, but the 35 is getting a little upgrade and it seems stupid not to do them both while everything is blasted apart for ceramic coat. i cant decide what to do about the down pipe. it is the closest to the firewall and i am thinking about doing a high quality heat wrap. its stainless so i think it will hold up, but i could also have it coated. i need to figure the exhaust brake out though if it gets coated.



i also got a start on port matching the flange and housing. i need to do a touch of smoothing in the manifold and in one of the pics can see the pyrometer thermocouple port has been drilled and tapped

I need to grab some more flappers and cartridge rolls tomorrow to finish

If it was me i'd go ahead with ceramicoat on that stainless part too. ☺

Thanks! as you well know, ive been playing with the idea of bigger turbo stuff. i'll leave well enough alone for now, but who know what kind of crazy ill come up with later. a couple new turbos and a 13mm pump and i'm in the big number area. i am excited to drive this set up and see how it does. i get the feeling it will be just what i need for the drive to work, or the haul a jeep to moab thing. BUT, i have revised that flange in my head a few times to accommodate an s300/s400 set. i could make it work, but i would have to rebuild the whole piping set up.... haha, stupid. maybe in a different truck. the yellow rig needs an oil burner and some go fast i think...

the piping isnt really that bad. it is a lot of fitting and grinding but i like it. gives me something to tinker with after work and isn't to fast paced. still feels like accomplishment, but doesn't require that i work very hard. perfect combo.

i kind of want to coat the down pipe, but it would require i buy my exhaust brake right now. not all bad, i am turning 30 pretty soon, so i guess a pac brake would make a decent adios to my 20s! my biggest concern is proximity to the firewall. it needs to keep heat off the firewall. if the coating is as good at that as a heat wrap then i wont care. i was staring at the truck the other day and decided that i like the green and the black of the engine. so i dont want to cover the firewall with heat barrier like i had planned. i will cover the inside, but i was going to do both sides

i guess it would be far enough not to bother. and i suppose i would be able to wrap it after the fact if i hate it. it should be easy as pie to remove. i kind of wish it could be cleared and hold the finish. the coloring from the welds is cool. but if that was the case, i should have taken the time to go full robotic on the welds. as it is, i just ran over the seams quickly and put it together.

im not sure i would trust it not to get all crappy looking. i'm sure it still gets hot and probably hot enough to burn any clear coat off. i think i will be happier with the color long term anyhow, so it looks finished.

certainly... i have been thinking of a good build plan for it so once i get a chance it will have a definate plan. i am basically thinking of a way to build it so i can easily sell it without a huge loss. i am sure i could recoup financially but i dont want to spend as much time going overboard on it in the time/fabrication/custom craziness sense.

i have this evil plan for the m715. i want to grossly overpower it. so that will be a whole powertrain swap. i have the very beginnings of my needs collected and once i am done with the chevy i will hopefully tear into that overhaul on steroids. it needs a better rear suspension and i am planning on doing some more tube work as well. it will be due for new tires in the not too distant future and i will incorporate any changes there into the refit as well. when i pull the current tbi454, nv4500, 205 combo out of the jeep in favor of the yet to be disclosed gm v8(not a dmax) 4l80, 205 combo i will sling them in the yellow truck. it has been a very reliable rig and has great drivable power. so, it may just keep that. if not, i'll do a rebuild on another 6bt and put it in the yellow truck.

on the subject of coating, i have been getting stuff prepped to send.

decided to port match all the passages as well as i could.

the actual casting is much less regular than the spec'ed size of the holes. this caused a fair bit of blending to get the two all happy. the housing was blended back a ways.





when i welded the flange on the hacked up manifold, it produced a few blunt spots in the passage of gas. i mended them as best as could be.



hard to get a feel for it in pics, but i am pretty stoked with how it came out.



then the manifold and flange were matched. pretty easy considering they are the same exact cut pattern...



this was also done. the cut of the flange is very close to the t4i so it should be ok. i should have blasted it with the grinder back when i was doing the hotpipe.

Looks awesome !!!!! I have read this whole thread. You got me wanting to tear into my 70 cst and do all kinds of evil things to her . My father in law bought her brand new in August of 69. I will have to bush up on my welding skill a bit though. Can't wait . I have a common rail sitting in the shop floor . And a 97 3500 sitting in the driveway . I also have a nv 5600 and a nv 4500 . Now i just need to decide which one I will be putting in the truck

oh, i vote CR and 5600. that would be a sweet combo. i really want to do a CR at some point. the electronic tunability is very cool. i like the simple reliability of this old mechanical set up for my truck, but there is always another project cooking in my head. i will say, i think my next "hotrod" diesel project will have a built auto. autos are fun to drive.

yeah, to heck with that port work. thank goodness for ear buds, ear muffs and safety glasses. that stupid compressor ran for a long time!

here are a few things i've been tinkering with.

that twitch i talked about a while back, hasnt gone away. here are those precision spacer washers.



gotta be careful to keep it all lined up.



all six replaced. feels much better. just before you want to stop because it is to tight, it bottoms. this also gave me an opportunity to check that the not as intended o-ring set up wast not being overcrushed. every thing looked great there.

welded and installed. painted sort of pretty.



stuck an old filter on. i need another filter nipple to get both installed and ill need to get some filters.





i have also been finishing up all the loose ends to get the exhaust to the coater. i decided to go ahead and coat the DP. i havent ordered the ex. brake yet, but i did get the Marmon flanges for it so i can get the ball rolling on the coating.

anyhow, i called Interstate Turbo in denver. asked for a couple of 5" flanges and v-band clamps. give them the payment info and hope i dont get slaughtered. the whole pile was 80$ delivered and the clamps appear to be of better quality than the flange and clamp(single) set up i spent nearly 60$ on for the DP. the flanges have more material to work with and are of a heavier gauge. the real kicker was, i ordered them via telephone at 4:15p.m. yesterday. today at 10:30a.m. they were sitting on my workbench. fantastic.

i was happy with the hook up.

i attacked this with a die grinder and AL burr.



so i could fit the new flange



melted it on outside,



and in.



here is the OE flange. total oddball. this flange lets me use 2.5" tube.



the other side of the flange is SS for use with SS or MS tube

Nice work. I've had MS flanges made in the past to be able to retain the stock compressor out let flange. It wasn't cheap though.
