Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks! hopoe you had a good turkey/football/gastrointestinal distress weekend as well!

speaking of, travel and long weekends and general laziness have made for limited progress.

i did get this thing reinforced and painted. i located a universal parallel flow condenser that will fit. still needs to be ordered.

for some reason i have been putting this particular task off for a while. it was super easy and turned out looking good.

had to drill some holes and twist a tap through.

mounted this.

tucked out of the way. close to the winch motor. need to decide on a color and get the bumper to PC someday. this was the last task that needed done for that

Re: 72 k20 project

i have been fighting with backordered parts and waiting on shipping, but in the mean time i have made some progress on the garage in hopes of a more productive, if not warmer winter

hung this lennox 45K btuh unit.

last night i ran gas, and hope to get the vent finished this weekend.

i need to support the pipe on the wall, but i was lazy and called it a night.

Re: 72 k20 project

I liked this project so much I had to go get my own. A 71 K5 with a 1993 Cummins and NV4500. It was already installed, so now getting it running. Since it's a rotary pump, we're aiming for 350hp and 710 tq at the rear wheels.

not even any to speak of. had a dusting a few times and the hills have been getting a fair amount, it has been raining at this elevation, so we are getting some moisture at least.

the heat is on! may be the best thing i could have done for progress. easy to do work when you are comfortable. easy to get the f-its when cold. have to hook up the t-stat tomorrow, but i jumped it and ran it tonight. pure awesome. truck might be done by now if it had been there from the first winter...

Re: 72 k20 project

The best equipped shop any where is no good without heat ! We have been luckey so far this winter with milder temps than expected. Sure helps to motivate when I know if I fire up the heat before dinner I can go,tiker after dinner and still feel my fingers ! How's the parts truck working anyway ? Did it ever get a cheap, and cheerful paint job ? Still driving it daily ?

Re: 72 k20 project

still a daily driver. splits time with the m715, but still gets the majority of the duty.

it is as ugly as ever. worse even

mashed bambi's dad with it a week and a half ago. yanked back into sort of shape and now has even more cheap ugly and stinky. sucks that it bashed the oem 67 metal, but if i keep this truck it was going to get a solid re-do anyhow. it did convince me that i will be doing something for a sturdy bumper on the green truck. i laughed at this, but i would go cry if i did this to the green truck.

That's crummy. Did it have any bumper on it ? If not I bet you have at least 5 that would have done the job. Lol. That's usually how it works around here.

Like the heater. Nothing worse than frozen fingers working the tools. If I had gas I would have went this way also. Looking forward to more updates now that you have a warm shop lol.

Good job on the heat. Your right, i cant think of how many times it was too flippn cold to wanto work. Us cold weather guys could be done in half the time with the shop set up properly.
Too bad about the hit, but it does kind of give it an attitude! Deer are so thick, i had one run right into the pass door the other night on mommas car. Grrr

Re: 72 k20 project

Ryan, nice upgade to the shop. Whats the kinnai or whatever box below the heater? I don't see a gas pipe going to your ceiling mount, is that only a air handler? Also did you have the dimensions on the block holes above the belhousing (to locate to bellhousing bolts)? Too bad on the deer encounter, seems like all the trucks I start to like end up hitting deer at some point.

no bumper. the good one i had was being saved for the green truck. now, i think ill build one for it, so maybe ill use the yellow truck as a guinea pig for that design. or ill just leave it. haha. it gets the neccesary attention. oil changes, brakes, heater(ish). other than that it is not allowed to take much from the green truck fund/time.

i was really happy that i had easy access to the natural gas from my water heater supply, and that gas is so cheap. even being uninsulated, the garage is tight enough to stay pretty warm so hopefully the bill doesnt triple or anything. when it is cold, i was spending 25$ a weekend on propane for space heaters, so even if it does increase the bill a bit, it will be cheaper to run this unit.

i always think poorly of my Phoenix based friends during the winter. i was visiting with Mosesburb a couple of winters ago in his driveway in PHX. he was wearing arctic gear and huddling over a space heater. i was wearing a t-shirt and carhart button up shirt and sandals with my jeans. haha.

its crazy how many i have seen this year. i could feed the homeless just by shooting them with a .22 while i have my morning coffee. they are everywhere

Nice heater, I'm sure you wished you did that when you moved into the house. I can't wait to see your front bumper. I've been thinking of a serious front bumper even more after you whacked Donner.

Re: 72 k20 project

The Rinnai is on demand hot water. it runs off natural gas also. there is gas headed up to the unit in the second pic. it pulls off of the line that stubs out for the H20 heater.

Ryan, i do wish i had done this years ago, but as they say about hindsight...

i managed to go 8 years and not do any real damage with deer, so i am lucky. i wish it didnt happen, but i am just glad it wasnt on some fancy new truck. probably could have gotten away with 7 bucks in repairs... ha

Re: 72 k20 project

who cares, its a lease! haha i always thought leasing was dumb, now that i realize the benefit, i kind of like it. just push that magic button and some jackwagon sends you a rollback. although last time, i tried to get an M3 loaner and they said no. apparently the bearded hippy look didn't inspire trust in Iowa...

Here we just pick them up after we run them over - a little extra blood in the meat but nothing the barbecue can't fix.

Re: 72 k20 project

i welded a set of hoops on the hitch for safety chains. i think that is the last thing before PC. that is the third time ive said that though.

got enough stuff together to make this obvious enough. i made some chéz mock up shafts out of some trashed d60 35spli stubs. ill order the bar sometime but this gave me a cheap head start on designing the arms and axle mounts.

there is a handy 3"x4" rec tube crossmember welded in the frame here. i took another few years off the life of my 1/2" dewalt and hole sawed a couple holes on the inside of the rec tube layout. the tube was welded in on the original channel and boxed around.

i beveled frame rail with a hatchet(well, not really). the sleeve is a piece of 2"x.120" wall DOM.

after some creative grinding i welded these on

decided to make a purdy weld

you can see the oilite flanged bushing in there. the stickout of the tube was figured with the fishplates to set the bushing just outside. i also twitched out a little and faced the DOM to length, so the bushing face is square and flat.

the bar ends and splined hubs, as well as the oilite bushing all came from Ruffstuff.
