When you're hesitant to loan your truck to anyone without a week-long course involving classroom instruction on the nuances of drum brakes, non-synchro farm boxes, manual steering and worn ball joints. Followed by a operators skill test and waiver of liability.

Plus all the other little tricks and secrets that we learn over time that just become habit for us...

Re: You Know You're Working on an Old Truck When...

I was scared to death every time my wife took off with the 'manual' breaks. She literally stood on the brake pedal to get it to stop.

Re: You Know You're Working on an Old Truck When...

you wonder when your last tetanus shot was

you leave a set of work gloves in the truck at all times (for the above reason)

you can fit all of the tools you need for an emergency kit into a small mechanics roll

you have to wear a face shield anytime you're working under the truck because of all the dirt/rust that falls from it

you have a wood bed that may or may not be fully intact

wiring is so easy a caveman could do it

when you beat on your dash to get the lights in the guage cluster to turn on

you spend 2x as much, or more, than you paid for the vehicle and it's still not done

yet you spend about half as much as you would for a newer vehicle...but it's a million times cooler

you have antique mechanics tools for working on your engine because the modern ones don't work

you periodically have to bang on the starter with a hammer to get the engine started due to the solenoid sticking

you buy used/old parts for your truck, that may not be for/from your model truck, just because

A trip to the junkyard is like being a kid in a toy store

you talk to a guy, who knows a guy, who's brother's friend is related to, who's folks have the part you need....and you're able to get the part and make some good friends along the way.

you have a list of people who you've gotten parts from in the past and what things they're looking for just in case you come across it.

you're anal retentive about keeping your records down to every penny you spend on the truck

you start justifying bigger and bigger purchases...first it starts out as some hand tools, then it's something bigger like a timing light, then an air compressor, then a welder, then a bigger air compressor because the first one you bought just doesn't cut it, then a hydraulic lift, and so on

you can swap a motor and drive off in about an hour

you are well versed in the full use of a term that rhymes with "bit duck"

After you bang your head on the fender and the dent is in your head instead of the Fender.

Re: You Know You're Working on an Old Truck When...

Opps, my last one was covered..

When you cant start your truck because the hand crank fell off the truck and you cant find it.

And the clincher:
Having to replace a wooden spoke!

When come back out the parking lot after picking up some parts, there is a group of people arguing over what year it is, and what color it used to be!
