Re: rear disc brake templates and drawings

i was able to use these plans and a pair of 1977 deville rotors to make a 5 lug setup. My axle is a 5x5 pattern with a 3.062 center hub. The 6 lug rotor has a 3.100 center so it is loose and you have to still drill pattern. I spoke to hilljob about this. I guess some axles have a different center hub od. Really the only difference in the setup is that you have to turn down the OD of the axle to 6.190. the only other difference is that the rotor od is .500 smaller so the caliper mounting holes move down aprox .250 on the bracket.

Re: rear disc brake templates and drawings

Looks good, did you use a plasma? So what your saying is with the six lug set up there is nothing needed, just bolt the plates and calipers and call it good?

The 5-lug axles are the ones that require drilling if you use the rotors mentioned in the plans. However, this DeVille brake rotor idea may save on drilling. Considering three of the holes look "thin" or intrude on an existing hole, I have found it tough to find a machine shop willing to take on the task. I think the shops around here won't have a problem trimming down the flange on an axle.

6 lug is basically a bolt on and go..i myself upgraded to 1/2 inch studs , but you dont have to

yes, it will help out alot,,although you can also use a grinder and grind around the flange to help out as well...i guess i didnt realize that people would rather a machine shop do all the work rather then just measuring it in there garage and save em some cash, but whatever works i guess

Re: rear disc brake templates and drawings

We have a plasma burn table. Just put it into computer and burnt it out. The 6 lug would work perfect on that setup or a 5 lug with 3.100 center hub axle diameter. Both rotors are the same backspace so all spacers and brackets in plans work perfect. All it changes is placemrnt of two upper tapped holes. I was going to use 6 lug and drill to match, but my center hub is the same as caddy rotor at 3.062. I did not want .038 slop in center where it keeps it all centered up. Just all depends on what u have.

Will these work behind 15" rims, or is up-sizing needed?

If we're talking about 1/8" or greater, then I'd rather make sure it's even and balanced all the way around. Taking a grinder is fine if you plan on just driving to the local car shows or whatever. I plan on taking this truck on the highway and don't want any additional vibrations.

i totally agree with you,, i was just getting at when i came up with this it was to have a rear disc set up for way cheaper then you could buy a complete kit for.however if its very minor, i would grind it personally, but that is just my personal opinion

Re: rear disc brake templates and drawings

I dont fully understand why the parts required are such a big secret in this thread. I understand and support the money for the plans, but I feel the parts list should be posted. As examples CaptFab has at least three dirrerent rear disc setups available. He lists everything and that helps people decide what do go with. As an example one of his sets use F body LT1 calipers and another one uses this thread style calipers. One of his use caprice rotors and I think another is a 4x4 front rotor. This information helps people decide what to go with because maybe they have some of the parts on hand.

Here are some specs on the 5 lug rotor that is pictured above link in post #102.

It is the rear brake rotor for:
Buick Estate Wagon 1977 - 1979
Buick Lesabre 1977 - 1979
Buick Riviera 1977 - 1978
Cadillac Coupe DeVille 1978 - 1979
Cadillac Deville 1977 - 1977
Cadillac Fleetwood 1977 - 1979
Cadillac Sedan DeVille 1978 - 1979
Cadillac Seville 1977 - 1979

Which if you want a parking brake then the rear caliper for this application should also work, but be careful most rebuilt calipers will not have the brackets needed to secure the parking brake cable nor the arm that actually moves the piton in and out.
