Re: A real Unicorn, Finally 71' Cheyenne Super SWB BB

I always figured GM went from 396 to 402 for the same reason they took the 283 to 307 and the 327 to 350. For that matter,in cars, the 427 to 454.

Another angle is that the bore was increased to help make up the loss of power due to the drop in compression, all part of the new science in meeting the new emissions requirements.

That's was always my understanding...with all the V8s. I always figured they called the 402 a 400 for the same reason they round off all the motor displacements. They didn't offer the 400 SBC in trucks and maybe they underestimated the confusion it would bring later.

Great truck!

So in all this reading, i'm guessing my chances of finding a real SWB BB truck for under 10k is going to be inpossible? Darn!

I have seen alot of 67s and a few 68s that never had a spid. I am not sure why. I think every truck after 69 got one regardless of the number of options.

Eric, I think the earlier ones were just paper and over a period of time they faded beyond recognition or came off while the later ones were covered with a clear adhesive.

Re: A real Unicorn, Finally 71' Cheyenne Super SWB BB

I thought in 1971 it would have a steel floored bed instead of wood.

Re: A real Unicorn, Finally 71' Cheyenne Super SWB BB

Wood floor was an option until '72. Should be listed on the SPID as "E81 FLOOR BOARD".
