I'm sure it was always on level ground beeing babied too? I know it'll all help. If my frame wasn't as tall and thick as it is, I'd be more worried. But it should be fine. (We'll see.)

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks!

i finally got around to drawing and cutting/forming/welding the under engine crossmember. this will be bolt in as well to facilitate removal of the drivetrain should that be necessary. it needs the welds finished and then i can get the frame mounting points blasted out. i think i will be able to remove all of my angle iron bracing after that!

i had to toss in a few flared holes for that race truck feel, and as a plus to the cool factor they actually make the material stiffer.

the spreader tubes are welded in at the bolt holes here

approximation of the placement. holding it with my hand and taking a picture was a bit challenging. it will be forward of the axle housing to avoid interference. hopefull it will help lend some rigidity to the steering box area as well.

Re: 72 k20 project

thanks guys!

i got the front crossmember mounted. hacked some parts out in the ol skool method instead of waiting for the draftsman to get them sent out to the machine.

i also hacked apart my pirated B&W and got that partially installed. i still have to connect it to the other 2x4 crossmember somehow but i need a few winks to think on it

Re: 72 k20 project

i finished up mounting the B&W this afternoon. probably paint tomorrow

i ended up using the 2"x2"x3/8" angle that is included with the B&W and then tied it all together with some 2" square.

the underside

Re: 72 k20 project

That looks very nice. I was trying to figure out how I wanted to do my B&W and I think my truck is going to be getting the frame boxed now. That will make it a lot easier to do the hitch, and it will be a lot stronger. Great work!

Re: 72 k20 project

thanks guys!

Ryan, i am happy with how it came out but if you follow along the same lines i would just space the crossmembers as such to allow the hitch to sit on both of them. i wasnt smart enough to measure an actual hitch when i put the crossmembers in. i was still thinking that i would build my own at the time so it wouldnt matter. either way im sure yours will come out great.

Re: 72 k20 project

so i did this earlier today. it has some good stuff that ill probably use for mine. its not perfect but the bed is in better shape than mine and i can use the front clip as well. i think i am going back to 72 front instead of the 67. i know of another bed on a trailer that is in almost perfect shape and i may be able to trade for that one but who knows. i may put this back together with the 67 front and sell it for a flatbed or something? i may turn it into a shortbed for my wife!

Re: 72 k20 project

Very nice. From that pic, it almost looks like you could drive that truck the way it is. I see you're finally using a real truck to do the work now.

Re: 72 k20 project

it runs and drives, but it would need some tuning and all that to go up and down the road. the steering joints are all pretty well gone too. but we cruised around the block with it just fine. and yeah i have a ford pulling work duty right now. my chevy/ford/dodge frankenstein is taking that over when i get done though. i have always like the 90s fords. comfortable and with a 460 or 7.3 they work pretty good too.

Re: 72 k20 project

Man that is a sweet parts truck and will be cool to flip. Nice score man. And I agree with the frankenstein trucks taking over the work scene. Haha! I think my friend wants to use mine to pull his pulling truck to Texas in October. Uh, I better get on it.

Every time I touch mine I see more that needs to be made, built, and done. One of these days, haha. Now I have to cut pieces to box the rear frame. Peer pressure sucks.
