Re: Jebb's Project 1959 GMC

Got the taigate back from the media blaster. It looks, well better. It has some heavy pitting and it looks like they didn't blast the sides because it would have destroyed the metal. I may have to canabalize another gate to make this one work right. What do you guys think?

I know that the body guy who worked on my truck's tailgate figures he spent 40+ hours on it....

Re: Jebb's Project 1959 GMC

you can buy a blank tailgate and then cut the "GMC" out and weld it into the new gate.

Funny you should mention that, after close inspection and lots of thought, we were discussing that very idea just yesterday. That may be the way we have to go. This one is pretty shot. Thanks guys!

Thumbs up Re: Jebb's Project 1959 GMC

Well I sealed the deal on drivetrain today. After careful weighing of my options I have decided to run a Pontiac motor after all. The thing is it's a GMC not a Chevy and although Chevy's are my first love, this truck is not one. If my truck were to have come with a V8 in 1959 it would have been a Poncho motor not a Chevy mill under the hood. I am not going to bother tracking the correct 336ci motor but am picking up a 350 that is coming out of my cousin's 1969 Firebird. It's strong and fresh, he build it about 7 years ago and it was strong! Too strong, it blew his tranny almost immediatly. He had a tranny built to handle the torque monster but then he decided to go bigger with them motor and tranny. The car has been sitting since the tranny blew so it is still low milage. I am excited about the deal and about doing something alittle different. It has a set of machined Ram Air 3 heads and we are negotiating a set of rollers for them also. I will be pulling the motor and tranny out the weekend after this coming one. Then after a quick freshing up it's going in the truck. I will take pics for you guys!

Your project is looking good. It will be nice to see you get some work done on that cab. What is the story on the 63 vert nova?

It will be much easier once I get that cab dolly built!

The Nova is a project that I ran out of money and ambition on a few years back. It's sick because it's really close to running but you know how it goes. I want disk brakes more than I want to hear it run. I am too into the truck to even think about touching that one right now. When she's done though it's on for real this time!
Heres a few pics of the Nova for anyone interested.

This is as far as I got today, I plan to yank the motor and tranny on Sunday, I got suckered into working tomorrow. Being out there with this car today brought back a lot of memories! My cousin used to let me "ues" this car when I was in highschool to avenge losses in my own car. She was really a healthy girl!

I got it almost ready to pull, just need to get to a few more header bolts and yank the starter and a few more little things.

Re: Jebb's Project 1959 GMC

The Bird is the Word!!! I would take it off his hands if he ever wanted to unload it. He is building some obscure Pontiac motor for it. He just got it back from the machine shop. So in a way I am helping both of our projects along, I'm just getting this "old junk" out of his way.

I was actually unable to finish yanking it out on Sunday however, my cousin's girlfriend had some bad luck and ended up in the hospital about 2 hours from here. He then ended up down there and I didn't think he would appreciate me pulling the engine out of his baby without being around to supervise. I know I would feel that way. Anyways, the plan is to get it out the next time we are both off. In the mean time I am buying paint for the inside of the cab and materials to build my tip and flip dolly tomorrow. The saga continues, stay tuned.

Re: Jebb's Project 1959 GMC

Well here is the promised update. Not on the truck but on the house search, the family and the trucks will be moving to Chandler Arizona on October 1st. I will get pictures when I get the trucks moved over there. The house is great for a car guy. It has 2 RV gates to hide all my junk behind as well as a 2 car garage for the ones that don't run. The ones that we drive of course will stay in the drive way. Project once again on hold until we get moved in. This will of course dip into my funding so progress may slow a bit. It will be much easier to work on in my very own garage instead of in my Dad's yard though so we will see what happens. The truck is a lot more appealing than a night of T.V. watching.

Re: Jebb's Project 1959 GMC

It's only about 20 miles from where I live now, a little farther from work but they let you you ride the carpool lane if your on a bike in Az. I guess I will be back to riding everyday, it will save lots of ga$ money too.
