Olds powered 72 GMC

Crank looks good. Found a great engine builder. Plans are a 375hp/430ftlbs build. Decking the block and heads. Should have pics of the short block within a week or so. Finally, after buying and selling a few consoles, I picked my combo. I will refurb it a bit and use it with my hurst promatic as shown. Just enough, I think.

See how the center exhaust port divider does not come all the way to the edge? Thats what gives the Olds sound.

My machinist will be welding in a complete separation of the two ports. It unlocks quite a bit of power. The headwork on this build may be worth as much as 150hp. Heat crossovers will be welded up too. She'll be a b#@ch to start on a cold morning but I will figure out the formula. Gasket matching of the headers will be a bit of a nightmare to the tune of a few hundred bucks (GULP). At least Olds parts are really inexpensive and easy to find. Companies like Mondello and Dick Miller Racing, make it truly affordable. LOL

My engine builder is not a very happy camper when it comes to the re-use of my headers. They flow like crap. I dont know what to do right this minute. The headers I have were modified to fit. I need to find a descently priced set of headers that don't need extensive (if any) modifications other than the exhaust flange. I hope someone can inform me of a set that would work in my application. Here's a pic of what I have to replace.

These are for a Firebird 403 or other SBO.
My guess is you would need Cutlass headers. Maybe try Google images?

Yeah, NONHOG, the 68-72 cutlass headers are the ones. Time to buck up again I guess.

Just in case any of you guys like these things. Bought it for the girlfriend so she would get off my ass about all of the money I'm spending on the truck. lol 77 Hornet AMX 304ci auto. 66,000ml. $2200. Rust free/dent free (except for the little one over the driver's headlight. Gonna build up a 360 for it but probably won't get to swapping it until after the fair weather this year. The interior is tear free. Less than 600 red automatics made this year. I like variety!

My 350 Olds short block has been assembled. The engine builder's valve grinder broke so he subbed out the last of the head work. Should get it on the dyno before the end of the month. Having a Holley4778 700cfm carb built for it right now.

Gonna spray the engine bay of the AMX today. Should have it on the road in 2/3 weeks. Too many projects = no rapid progress on any one vehicle.

Got the AMX sprayed out and now doing the engine enamel. The engine for my truck is still being assembled. Budget builds get put on the back-burner I guess. lol Save a few bucks and wait a few months longer... oh well. I have a 1/3 Chev, 1/3 Ford, 1/3 Dodge and all AMC to re-assemble in the meanwhile. YAY! I hope it make's a little bit of sense as I get into it. I didn't take it apart and I've never owned one before.

Just a quick clean-up. The last guy sprayed it with the wrong colour. Our local parts store sells a mini spray kit made by Prevall. Mix up a lttle paint and it comes with an aerosol canister to apply it. Better than a typical spray can and the only way to get my colour match correct.

Picked up a carb core for my Olds engine. A Holley 4778 700cfm. The core had a broken baseplate and was $30 and the new baseplate was $95. It's exactly what the engine builder specified, so off to the carb guy for a rebuild. The carb is my last responsibility to the builder before the dyno run.

Got the carb back today. Need to find a good 3/8" feed line and pressure gauge now.

I just return a summit fuel pump build by holley. They look very similar. Pump was way too loud. Summit tech didn't even ask questions and swapped it for Mallory 140 pump. A little more $ but you can't even tell when it's running.

I got a great deal on the pump, fuel cell, fuel gauge, B&M aluminum tranny pan, electric fan, line lock and battery box. I paid $305 for all of it so I figured I would use the pump even though you are about the 5th person to warn me of the "noise maker" Holley blue pumps. lol Most of the stuff is still brand new. The plan at this stage of the game is to just mount a fuel cell in the bed along with the battery box and get this thing ready for freddy. Over the winter I will most likely start working on the finer points of the truck and doing a tank between the rails. My chrome tranny pan didn't clear the crossmember very well but the one I just picked up is clearanced for just this kind of problem. I will just sell the chrome one now. The electric fan is off of a mid 90's Regal and I was told it would easily do the job. I need a bigger rad though as mine is only a 2 row.

Got the AMX engine painted last night. Buddy was on holidays and I couldn't get into his shop until now to work on the car. The colour is correct for 1971 engines. Cell phone pics kinda suck but it's a metallic turquoise. I'm doing an engine swap this winter and will just keep the 304 wrapped up for the next guy. I bought a 1970 360 with new rings and bearings. The engine builder doing my olds is quite familiar with amc as well so I'm gonna pull the heads and have them worked a bit while it's aside. Start assembly at the firewall this morn and brakes are the first go.

A few hours and a couple more parts cleaned and placed today. Got the car outside, nose to nose with a running 78. 1 year newer than mine but pretty much identical under the hood. The yellow one has a transplanted 401ci auto 3:54 posi. I'm sure it's quick.
