I don't shoot a Weatherby (good looking rifles) because they are way overpriced from the factory and other bolt actions perform as well or better, the price of ammo is ridiculous compared to other cartridges that perform just as well, and sooner or later one or two of those small multiple lugs is going to let go and a guy may have the back end of a bolt in his face. Cannot see anything to be gained by that extra expense, and maybe some loss.

Kind of funny considering they are all "wet tested". The operator might have been taking a pull off the peace pipe when that one came down the line. With the hundreds and hundreds of Holleys that have gone through my hands I have never seen that one before. Seriously....since it's a 35, take and drill it out to a 37 or so for fine tuning. It's still usable.

LOL.......do you feel better? BTW, Mine's not this new crap. Have a German and a Southgate. I also reload so the ammo expense is minimized too. When my Dad handed it down to me, what was I supposed to say?

If it had been me, I think would have said "Thank you very much Dad, these are very nice rifles and valuable on the market. I much appreciate your generosity".

However, I would not have felt compelled to use them. After reloading for 45 years and shooting many different cartridges, I well know the performance capabilities of various cartitridges in whatever bore they might happen to be - and also know their "smackdown" capabilities. Most Weatherby cartridges do not perform at optimum efficiency/effectiveness for their caliber.

On a more serious note, I have read cases and talked with some experts about lug stresses and failures of that bolt design - not a joking matter. Weatherby was somewhat ingenuous but his forte was marketing, and he sold the dickens out of his unique rifles. All to the good, unless a guy winds up with the bolt blown back - as have some.

That was a problem with a "velocity stack" air cleaner, but my current one covers it. I think people would benefit greatly from a carb building book, regardless of the make of their carb. I've only dealt with a 1406 afb and my 1978 q-jet, and Cliff Ruggles' book has helped greatly
thought the last post was 2/18, not 1/18

Factory Q-jet for me. Starts right up first time every time, decent economy and easily rebuild able by most any carb shop.

Don't know how I missed this poll. I have had all the Carbs in the poll list and honestly nothing has beaten my Q-Jet once I have reworked it. I love em.

Since it's back, I need to brag about my home run I hit a couple of days ago. Thanks to the nationwide Craigslist search, I found these to bad boys listed as $350. I'm sure most guys thought he meant each but I wrote him and asked. He said "for the pair". I now own them and the 750 main bodies will be swapped out for 650's to go on top of my 496. I like how guys complain about getting a Holley to run right and I can get 2 to run like a couple of sewing machines together!

depending on what you want, if you want performance holley double pumper can't be beat
wrenchbender is right you can't beat a Q-JET when it's right, there only probelm is the throttle shaft, but you can rebush those, and if you don't know a whole lot about carbs go with a edelbrock...my vote is for holley 650 or 750 double pumper, no gas mileage but no bog either, i hate vacuum secondaries

Edelbrock's are simple. Holley's aren't complicated. Quadrajets aren't to complicated when compared to the Thermoquad. My personal favorite is the Autolite 4100.

Yeah im trying to deciede what carb I want.My main concern is cold weather driveability.I called summit racing he said any carb will do as long as it has a choke and vacuum secondaries.I replaced the holly on 72 a few years ago with a qjet and had nothing but problems wth it.

If you notice above, there is no clear winner among the voters. This is probably one of those questions that can never really be answered as each of the choices has their advantages.

With that being said, my old 72 had a 350 and a 1406 Edelbrock. Once I replaced the 160 degree thermostat with the correct 195 and got the choke adjusted, it ran great. Before that it did not and I thought it was carburetor problems when it was the thermostat all along.

Im shure qjets are good carbs.I think mine is just so worn out it shouldn't have been rebuilt in the first place.I was told my problems could also be the springs in my hei so im going to do that first. This is a good thread/poll but I don't think it helped me deciede what carb I want.Lol.

Re: POLL: Holley? Q-jet? or Edelbrock? Let's finish this once and for all!!!!

I started this thread strictly for entertainment purposes and didn't really care about the outcome though I thought it would be interesting. Most people vote based on what came with the truck and if it is running good. GM went with the Q-Jet more than any other carb because it worked. Edelbrock sells millions of the weber/carter design because it works. I love holleys because they work, are really the only thing down at the track and the mod possibilities are crazy. Understand when I say Holley, I am really talking about the 4150 platform which includes Proform, Quick Fuel (which are the same by the way), braswell, Pro Systems and on and on.

Qjet for me. I've had many qjets, many edelbrocks and some holleys. Even though I live in a temperate climate, nothing beats a properly built qjet for jumping into the truck at 4am any day of the year and knowing it will start right up and run smoothly all day without a hickup.

I'm starting to slowly lean towards Quadrajets. They've been around for years and very dependable.

Rebuilding a couple of them right now and looking forward to the benefits of those big secondary's opening up!
