Hey it's looking good on all 4 wheels,you are making alot of headway,when's the date to put cab back on?Cool build,keep the pictrues of the progress coming

Do you all ever have days that nothing seems to go right? I worked on fitting the driver's side cab corner to the cab yesterday. It took a lot of manipulation to get it right, but I finally got it lined up and tacked it in place. Things were going well, so I decided to weld it solid. The outside turned out OK and won't take much filler to make it right:

However, no matter how hard I tried to get the seam in the back smooth, it got worst. I concluded that the original metal in the cab was very thin (not rusted, just thin compared to the replacement cab corner) and it either warped when I was welding it or I didn't fit the cab corner as good as I thought. I finally gave up when it got to this point:

BLECH!

By then, my wife was telling me that dinner was ready, so I put the tools up for the night. However, all I thought about last night and today at work is how ugly the back of the cab turned out. I know some would say, "just finish welding it and let the bed cover it up"....but I just couldn't leave it like that. So, I cut out the worst section tonight and fit a new patch panel to it. I only had enough time to tack it in place tonight. However, I am much happier with how it is turning out. I think it will look much better when it is finished. Here is how I left it tonight:

That looks great to me. And in the long run it may take less time than trying work the worpage out of the thin metal. Keep the pics coming.

Very nice fix on that. I've had the same problem in the exact same area when doing cab corners on these. Maybe the metal is thinner there from where it stretches when the stamp it at the factory? IDK

I thought the exact same thing...it is good to know that others have had problems with that same area.

Nice work!! the truck is coming along great. I have found that cutting out the old cab corner along the body line makes it much easier to weld in the replacement panel. The metal seems to be thicker there and the body line makes the weld disappear.

Thanks for the advice bcutt. I thought about cutting it along the body line, but was concerned about how straight it would be after welding. I'll keep that in mind on the next cab corner.

Ok folks.....Jesse and I decided to gather at my place this weekend and do a little cutting, welding, sweating, shortening, and creating "rust-free"

I bought some decent LWB bedsides to shorten, used this very helpful thread that Rokcrln created to shorten these sides (starts at post #195)...we had a few gap issues to overcome but ultimately got them all tacked together and ready to be finished (I must say I was more of an apprentice/ helper for this weekend's work...Jesse did all of the welds, and most of the cutting...Thanks Buddy!!!!)
So for the pictures...using the above thread and double checking our measurements, Jesse begins cutting

tada...the first side is completely cut....we did the same for the other one before we lost the daylight (and didn't want to bother the neighbors too much this Friday evening

So Saturday morning we decide to move the Mistress out so we'd have some shade and be a little cool (suppose to be 95 Saturday...yikes)

get the panels to line up...add panel clips....and hit it with the heat

and wa-la....we got ourselves a shortened bedside

All in all I think it took us 4 hours to cut everything up (had a neighbor stop by with their 3 yr old son who wanted to see what the sparks/ metal was all about

)....Saturday we got rolling around 10:30a and finished up tacking both sides and getting the passenger fender cup (Jesse will add that picture...BTW the repop cup didn't fit all that great

) on by 6:30p...whew it was a long day but we really got done with what we planned

Here is a picture of the fender with the new cup welded in place. We have some rework to do on the front/inside portion of the cup.

Geoff mentioned that his neighbors came over to watch the "fireworks show". Apparently, their son was very intrigued by all the noise and sparks. When he asked about it, his parents told him that we were cutting metal. When they said their prayers that night, the little boy said, "let's pray for the metal". He was very concerned about it!
