Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

Still have lots of detail work to do.
Wet sand, buff, and install all the trim, lights and accessories.

But I do have to say it runs and drives great

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

All of the prep work I did throughout the build is paying off now. I lost count of howmany time I put it together and took it apart before before I painted anything. By the time I got rolling on finish work everything was ready to just just bolt together.

I still have a few finishing touches to go. Wet sand, buff, install glass, power window and locks, stero system, pinstripe between the blue and silver, bed liner, new wheels and tires, add the chrome and detail parts then build some type of nerfbar step.

Wow, now that I start listing it all out I'm realizing I still have a lot of work to do.....

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

The nice thing about this conversion is that you can do whatever the hell you want to soup up that duramax, and the local epa can't say nada. Which means you will be pumping out some serious hp and torque, combine that with a big wheel and tire combo, and you can get some serious gas mileage out of it too. I have a friend with a 2005 dodge diesel and he has it chipped and a built trans, he runs 37's and turns about 15-1800 rpm at 80mph in OD. gets about 25-27mpg on the open road, which is pretty nice for a giant 4x4. This thing looks awesome can't wait to see it come to fruition.

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

Man this thing came out awsome. What is your hub to hub wheel base though? I am concerned to reach my wheel base target I will have to cut down so much the saddle area of the frame wont be long enoguh to mount my trucks body level. Also I saw diy4x mentiined for your body mounts but couldnt find them on their website. I will have to mod the front core support to keep my 93 yukon body right, however I have been entertaining the idea to cut the back off my 2006 cab donor, and then merge it to the back of my yukon. Assuming this is even going to be a possibility. Im still in planning phase here. But your post here has at least got me looking in the right direction.

These are the body mounts I made from spring hanger bushings, DOM tubing, and rectangular tubing.

My wheel base is 127" if i remember correctly. As far as having to modify your radiator support I'm sure you will have to make some kind of combination of the 2006 & 1993 to make it all fit. I would first look at the 2006 and go from there since it already has frame mounting points and the fan shroud and radiatator all fit it. Then you only have to adapt mounting points for cosmetic stuff i.e. fenders, headlights, and hood latch

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

Ok thanks, It must have been 1tonwannab who got them from diy4x. Yea my wheel base target is 112. So ill have to move the axle n cut the end, and cut at the factory welds and re weld after removing some frame from the saddle. Cutting and modding the frame is one thing. But if I was to use the 06 cab it would be a hell of a task to cut n weld that to the back of my yukon. Your post will really help me along the way tho. Thank you so much for sharing this project with all of us!!

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

Have you considered searching for a frame from a Tahoe/Yukon 116" wheelbase or silverado/sierra reg cab short bed 119" wheelbase.

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

I was looking for the 2500 series, wanted to go with th thicker frame rails. I think it can be done. Might be a little more tuff than yours though. I only need about 40 inches worth of saddle area, so if I use your method plus chop the saddle about 12 inches I think it will work. I'm stationed in texas with my truck here and my donor is back home in GA. Next month I'll be back home and can start work. I think I'm gona have to start by stripping both trucks to the frame and working the measurements and difference then. Just trying to get my head wrapped around it for now. Another consideration was to cut at the factory weld, and use the front frame, but instead swapping the rear portion of the frame for a 1500 regarding cab short bed. That should get me to the 119 and the remaining 7 inches is cake, but I would keep the 2500 axle and driveline, yet I would not be able to have the thicker 2500 rear frame rails that way. So in return I would box the rails for the additional strength. I would have to purchase a second donor for this though. But it is a thought I have entertained.
