Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Have read about overdrive units that have been added to the back of transfer cases. Was thinking of possibly getting one for my K20.

Anyone have any advice or recommendations? Is it worth the extra money and feasible. Gear Vendors is one of the companies that seems to be popular. Heard Advance Adapters may also make them. Just curious what others have to say about these.

Do an advanced search on this site for "gear vendors overdrive" and you'll see some info from other people here.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks Sicklajoie. Will do some searches.

K20 back at Bill's shop for some final touches before Ocean City car cruise.

Left side is done!

I'm thinking about maybe making some oak side panel racks for the bedsides and behind the window. Would stain and then finish with polyurethane. They would not be too tall maybe 20" or so. Personally like seeing the wood grain but I guess white sides would match pretty well also. Will keep thinking about it. I searched and did not find many pictures of side racks except on stake body trucks. Appreciate any pictures. Would put them on before hauling brush & yard waste. The racks would hopefully force me to load from the back which would help protect the sides.

id hand over a trophy for that truck. looks absolutely correct in every way.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks all! That would be real sweet to get a trophy one day!

Agree Ryan. Would probably only use the racks when hauling.
What do you think... paint the racks gloss white or use oak? Either should match well. Will definitely use stainless hardware to put them together with.

Could use some pine if I decide to paint them white. Cheaper and would get scratched up on the inside anyhow. Oak would definitely be more money. Would look nicer but be a little more difficult to install & remove due to more weiht . Will figure out something.

Couple pictures of the installed custom brake cables ordered from Inline Tube. They are suppose to be all stainless.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Shocks are Nitro 9000. Bought them from JC Whitney.

(2) item # 382363 $31.44 ea
(2) item #381749 $36.99 ea
(4) black boots $5.99 ea

The shocks were white when new. I sanded them with 400 grit and painted them gray.

Truck look amazing. As far as overdrive units, deff buy a gear vendors. Lots guys use them on high hp cars. Several people run them on Drag Week and they are amazing. They give away a couple of them every year too, they are one of the main sponsors of drag week.

Your truck looks awesome! If I was going to build wood racks or rails, I'd want to stain them and then seal them. That would set off the truck IMO!

I totally agree! Stay away from US Gear ones if they are still around. They like to eat bearings and gears for some reason.

That winch will come handy! Shoot, it'd be nice for pushing trailers around too!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

No more restore projects...at least for awhile. This one is taking a lot longer that I thought but am happy with the results.
Planning on enjoying the toys ( truck, Z28, & Regal) this summer on the weekends

Will probably need to sell one of them in the next couple years or so to help put our daughters through college.

I'm jealous - ready for mine to be at that stage... Wondering how your fuel fill came out. Any pictures? Any pictures and are you happy with the location and rate of fill? Congrats on a truck well done.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Still have not completed the fuel fill Ryan. The rate of fill is slow since I have to use a funnel with a long hose. I put blanket/plastic over the passenger bed side so fuel does not splash on paint and then insert the funnel with hose.
It is a pain to do it this way but of course this is only temporary.

I am planning on going to the Carlisle, PA car parts flea market in a couple weeks and picking up another fuel fill tube(s). The one I was going to use would have to be modified quite a bit.

Here's a pic of the fuel fill area. Notice there is a hose going into the fuel fill in the lower left corner of the inner wheel well. That is the vent tube from the tank. It is currently longer than needed and the extra is shoved down the fill line after I fill it. It helps block the fill. Also, I am not filling the tank to the top.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Put the K20 to work this weekend. Car show on Saturday. Hauling lawn mower and weed eater on Sunday.

Had some great feedback from quite a few on Saturday at the car show. There were some awesome cars there. Below is a picture of a light blue 71 Chevy K10 from York, PA. That truck is by far the nicest restoration I have seen to date on a 67-72 Chevy truck. He was voted one of the top 25 cars on Saturday.
Sam, who owns the truck, said it won best of show at Carlisle, PA one year. It is also on the front of one of the LMC catalogs.
