Re: Project Charity Case

I haven't done much to this truck except drive it lately, but I HAD to work on it this week and thought I would pass along what I found.

Over the last month I have heard a slight "ticking" noise while moderately accelerating. It was occurring in both drive and reverse. I had looked the truck over, but didn't find anything and concluded that it was a parking brake cable or speedometer cable slapping the frame.

Well, last Saturday I hopped in the truck and as I was pulling out of the driveway I heard, "tick, tick, tick, pop, rattle, rattle". I pulled back in the driveway to find the carrier bearing broken off from the frame and the driveshaft laying in the crossmember. After looking at it closer, I am certain that the 6" drop on the rear of the truck was forcing the driveshaft into the carrier bearing and it eventually ripped the bearing housing apart. I pulled the driveshaft last Sunday and this is what it looked like:

So, I decided to have a one piece shaft made. I took some measurements and dropped off my old driveshaft at a local shop on Monday. I picked up a new one piece driveshaft on Thursday. Here is what it looked like when I picked it up:

...and here it is after it was painted:

The new driveshaft is 59 3/8" from center of u-joint to center of u-joint, 3.5" in diameter and was $320. When I tried to install it, I found that the bracket for the carrier bearing interfered with the new shaft. I ground the rivets off and removed the bracket. The new driveshaft fit perfect after that. I have not had a chance to test drive it, but I don't expect there to be any issues. Cheers!

Just read this whole thing. Looking Good! I was a little dissapointed to see the pipe wasn't yours. The whole time I read this I was imagining a small town pipe smoking pastor putting a truck together! Either way, good work!

Ha, ha! Someone at work saw my truck in the parking lot and said, "I didn't know that you smoked!". I have been known to drive around with the pipe in my mouth for fun.

One of my favorite trucks on the board. Any updates or are you just driving the wheels off of it.

Thanks! That means a lot! I added a hidden hitch to it earlier this summer, but beyond that I have just been driving it. I even use it as a truck every once in awhile. Here is proof:

BTW, I see you live in New Haven. I lived in Washington, MO for 6 years.

I have a picture with it full of mulch too! That's what I love about this truck. I enjoy driving, the stance and wheels make it look like it is a work in progress, but I can still use it as a truck.

I lived there from 1999 to 2005. My wife and I have a lot of good memories from that town. I would love to have a burrito from El Nopal, a burger and fries from Dairy Delight, and a ice cream from Fritz's right now.

Re: Project Charity Case

Fritz's is no longer fritz's, It's still just as good though. I'm not sure if el Nopal is still El Nopal. It's been a while since I have been there. Dairy delight is still there though. Alot of stuff has changed since then. Wal Mart moved. Target is out by where Chico's used to be. There is a Kohl's out there as well. 100 is 4 lane all the way to 44.
