Around 1960 they were all rebuilt with 8V-71's and a Spicer 4 speed manual transmission, and they didn't get towed much after that.

Some tow truck, can't tell if it's a Marmon-Herrington or Coleman 4X4 conversion. Looks like it has a 'diesel' emblem, probably has a 4-71 in it.

Re: GM Semis

I always known them to have 6V-53's for Diesels.

Is the 6V-71 correct?

Yes, a few had 6V-71's. PMT's tandem auto haulers had 6V-71's.
Most did have 6V-53's though.

Re: GM Semis

It would be interesting to hear a 6-71 in a Tilt.

Were they available with a Road Ranger Trans as well?

1967 WW9500 6V-71 powered tandem Steel Tilt shows a Spicer 5 speed as standard. Fuller R94T Road Ranger 10 speed as an option.

Great photo of an RD series IH, thanks for posting KOOL IT. The sign of a great truck design : They look awesome even without much paint left! As Bob B mentioned, "westcoaster", is a reference to any extra long wheelbase tractor and I will add with Budds!

Re: GM Semis

Westcoaster kind of referred to any long-nose conventional back the 50's and 60's. That International 'Westcoaster' was also referred to as an Emeryville, because International had a truck factory there for many years. And that's where IH built a lot of trucks for the western U.S..

Re: GM Semis

Yeah, I always knew the International as the Westcoaster as well. Those were not sold back east. I always considered the long frame tractors to be west coast tractors or just western. I don't go far enough back to know those IHs as Emeryvilles. The ones I know of as commonly called Emoryvilles were the later/next style body, both conventionals and COEs*. No matter, I'd say it all works and I knew what trucks everyone was talking about. And since trucks were built at Emoryville over many years and many models, they are all Emoryvilles and the style/length of truck seen on the west coast and not the east (till length laws changed) can certainly be identified as a westcoaster.

*I went to find pictures of what I know as Emoryvilles and was shown all COEs, while I have always known the conventionals to also (mostly) be called that

Re: GM Semis

Mack had a plant in Hayward CA. as well, and like International built special 'Western' models. GMC did offer a special 'west coast' long conventional in the 50's. I believe it was part of the 960 series, powered by a 6-71T and had aluminum hood and fenders with other light weight components like Alcoa 5 hole wheels. Naturally it was built in Pontiac, but light and medium duty GMC's were built in Fremont for many years. In 1966 GMC introduced the MH9501, a special long nosed light weight conventional for the western states.
