4l80e Transmission Cooling

I'm currently doing a lq9/4l80e swap and I'm plumbing the transmission lines. The plan was to use the factory transmission cooler in the radiator and then to a small auxiliary cooler then back to the trans. But while i was looking at how i was going to route my lines i realized the ports on the radiator are for 5/16 line but the 4l80e uses 3/8, so I'm wanting to know if running the lines to the radiator would create a restriction and i should just run the lines to a large transmission cooler and plug off the radiator. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!!

Re: 4l80e Transmission Cooling

I have a US Radiator with a heat exchanger for the ATF. I plan to use a 200R4 with 3/8" lines (calls for 5/16") I bought the adapters for the radiator out/in to 3/8" tube inverted flare fittings I plan to use. As you can see not much restriction at all.

Re: 4l80e Transmission Cooling

Also for the Trans side you use two of these, which are NPTS instead of NPT wich is incorrect:

Re: 4l80e Transmission Cooling

These will make things a bit easier to fabricate:

Then all you need is tools and a bracket for the lines running next to the oil pan and that's easy enough.

Thumbs up Re: 4l80e Transmission Cooling

I have the 6.0/4L80E in my 71. I used the cooler and ran aux cooler. My transmission has never gone over 200 with normal driving. It has with a trailer behind it but not for very long and it was just a steep grade. it Normally runs along with my water temp.
I hooked the temp up to the scangauge 2, I keep a eye on the temps through the computer.
Doesn't hurt a thing.

It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

I went to O Reillys and bought the biggest one they had on hand. It has more than been enough! I also put one in my 64 SS Impala also.

Re: 4l80e Transmission Cooling

The 'Best' coolers are 'plate & Fin' coolers and they are stronger. The Tube & Fin coolers are not 'as' efficient and weaker. They cost more, you get more. It's your trany.

When they hooked my computer up they used the wrong ground on the computer. I had to move the ground wire for the temp senor to work.

truckdude239 read this. I got mine working by following this info.

If my info is correct then this is correct I have the yellow wire in spot 51 red connection. I don't have the grey in the 41 spot in the blue connector. I am also thinking it's a common ground wire though.

Re: 4l80e Transmission Cooling

Just went to Orielly's and found those transmission fittings as well - edelman 124640.
Also McMaster-Carr has them - https://www.mcmaster.com/6432t114
I forgot and bought both of them - hint don't order stuff online after cocktail hour.
