Re: Medium Duty trucks

I have three of these trucks, a 71 C50 /350/4speed/2 speed/PS/Tach/dump, a 70 5500 305 V6/4 speed/2 speed/dump, a 69 C50/350/4 speed/2 speed/Parts rig, perfect cab/clip. I hope to make two dumptrucks out of the three. The 70GMC 5500s' V6 is toast $350 purchase price, was running very well when I got it, loaned it it a friend and the dipstick is now "too short to reach the oil" The 71 was purchased for $300, hadn't been started in 15 years, had over $500 in copper scrap on it. The 71 C50 runs great, bought from a construction company for $500 and drove it home , the park brake needs to be rebuilt now, looking for the cable for it, anyone have a source?

Lots of these trucks in Alaska. Looking at a bus now with 5 speed and decent tires-rolling storage bin.

Also looking for a Clark or other 5 speed with overdrive, (anyone know how to identify 5 speed transmissions with overdrive?) and 22.5 wheels for two of these trucks. I know, dream on.... Shack

Re: Medium Duty trucks

Nice finds Shack! I got a 70 C50 That started life as a state roads truck in WV. Man is it rusty. Shame your not close. Had a line on a bunch of body parts, but guy never got back to me But thats how it goes sometimes. Would like to put PS on sometime. Especially if I get one of the plows I found. As far as figuring out the OD transmissions, I am sure if you checked the ID tags, the model number would help ID it. I know Spicer made some OD's for the military. 3053a if I recall was an OD. Should be able pick one up reasonable. Also you might try to find a dipstick stretcher before you loan out another truck. (I am sorry to hear about the engine. Those 305's are getting a little scarce)

Re: Medium Duty trucks

Sorry if this is a repost- but here's the LCF I recently purchased. Plans are to put the cab/front clip on the 1970 C-30 chassis I already have ready. May have some parts left over(chassis, etc) Will gladly pass along info on that later. Bringing it home in a couple weeks.
Great trucks, guys! Hope this thread stays around!

Re: Medium Duty trucks

Looks like it is in pretty good condition. I hope you got the hood with it.

Will you be starting a build thread?

Here are pics from a c60 tandem axle dump. The truck is still owned by the owner. I am negotiating to purchase it.

Re: Medium Duty trucks

That's a nice tandem example. I always wanted a dump like that. Those grab handles are GM parts.

Re: Medium Duty trucks

Here is a couple pics of my latest project. It has 366 BBC with 71,000 original miles, 5spd w/2spd axle, runs like a top. Bed lifts smooth also. I am planning on turning this into a rollback.

Re: Medium Duty trucks

I just picked up this 71 5500. 15k miles. 350/4+2. Planning on a Cummins/6 spd, disc brake axles and building a new western nauler style bed. No rust at all on the cab, the bed has some rot.

Hey Bushy, I'm trying to find rear drums for my 67 C40. They look like C50's - 10 bolt. Know any part numbers?

Re: Medium Duty trucks

Nice looking truck.

There is a guy over at Stovebolt.com who is pretty much an expert at finding parts for these great old trucks. Just post your question at the "Big Bolts" forum.

Also stop over and talk to us on here at the "Heavy Haulers" forum when you get a chance:

Re: Medium Duty trucks

That's a real nice dump truck there. You just need hoses the same length with the same size fittings. There has to be something out there. Custom made is always an option, but something has to match up

Re: Medium Duty trucks

Interesting truck and bus.

An All Wheel Drive School Bus is a pretty rare vehicle. I see it was used in WY. Would that have been used for mud, snow or both?

they were both found in the same farm in wyo and brought to billings. I'm not sure how bad the terrain is in Worland but I know my boss told me I had to get to the top of a hill by Sheridan in the slightly wet conditions and I snapped rearend and transfer case in a brand new 07 Silverado trying to get up it

Re: Medium Duty trucks

I would pull the Drums and check the Brakes. You could possibly have some leaky Seals and/or leaky Wheel Cylinders getting on the Shoes.

Re: Medium Duty trucks

Love this thread. Grew up driving a 1970 C-60 grain truck on the farm. Finally had a chance to snap some pictures of a local fire truck today. 3500 original miles. Ordered through a local GMC dealership and driven across the US after the fire apparatus was installed in Elmira New York.
